Developing and adding to shopify a Payment method for Merchants

I intend on developing a payment method, to be publicly available to all the merchants on Shopify. So that their customers can choose my newly developed payment method at the checkout. To clarify, I am NOT interested in adding additional functionality to MY e-ccomerce shop. This is NOT an app, or a plugin, rather a Payment method. However, the information available on the shopify.dev is obscure to say the least…so, I need clarification. Because, at the moment, it seems to me I need to pay $2500 a MONTH to become a “Shopify PLUS Merchant” in order to develop a payment method for other merchants to use? Am I understanding this correctly? I don’t think that’s right, because it makes zero sense that I the devloper would have to pay a platform to add functionality and value to their customers. That’s not the dynamic, we dev’s experience elsewhere. https://shopify.dev/docs/apps/build/payments

Hi Steve,

We’re currently not accepting new applicants for devs building custom payment methods / payment apps (see our docs on this). Plus merchants can in certain situations, but these would be for individual merchants rather than publicly available. We will open the payments platform to new applications in the future.

“We’re currently not accepting new applicants for devs building custom payment method”

  1. Where can i find this information publicly?

  2. Will being a Plus Merchant cost me $2,500 a month? This is not clear if it’s a yes or a no, please answer without sending me to another doc I have already seen.

Hi again,

1: You can find info on new payments process being currently closed in our docs:

2: The cost of a Shopify Plus subscription is subject to change depending on features you are using. I would recommend contacting our Support team and requesting a connection to the Plus team to discuss your plans to see if you can achieve what you’re looking for. You can reach support via the “Support” tab in your partner dashboard.
