I read that Shopify has a feature for printing shipping labels to make packaging easier. I was curious if this feature also works in Japan, for shipping with the postal service or private delivery services?
Hi, @douglerner . I’m happy to help you out with this!
Printing labels directly within your Shopify admin is a feature of Shopify Shipping. However, Shopify Shipping isn’t currenty available in Japan at the moment. You can find more information on Shopify Shipping and the current requirements to use it here. I’m also happy to pass along your interest to our team who look into improvements we can make to the platform in the future. We’re always looking for ways to expand features, so your feedback is appreciated!
All that being said, you may be able to use a third party app to make printing shipping labels easier for you. You can find a list of third party apps that help with shipping labels here.

Hi. Thanks for your reply. I’m still trying to decide what to do and haven’t signed up for a trial yet. One of my main concerns is sourcing. Ideally I’d like to source from within Japan and sell to customers in Japan, but as mentioned here - https://community.shopify.com/c/shopify-discussions/are-there-any-resources-for-wholesale-purchases-within-japan/m-p/2229290#M385844 - I can’t figure out how to source within Japan yet.
One question I have is if my little Japan company signs up for an account and sources and sells within the U.S. (for example, with drop-shipping) and customer pay in U.S. dollars, can I still receive payments in yen in my bank here in Japan?
Thanks.
Hi, @douglerner . Thanks for getting back to me with that information!
If you’re using Shopify Payments, your choice of payout currency depends on the location of your store. If your store is located in Japan, the only payout option is Japanese Yen (JPY). However, if you’re using Shopify Payments you can still sell to your customers in their local currencies (like USD in the US, for example) using Shopify Markets. You can find more information on pricing in local currencies here.

Thank you for your reply, Erin. The reason I’m thinking of opening the store with a Japan location is to try to get a bit of extra income for my tiny Japanese company which recently lost a couple of customers. I actually have a company in the U.S. as well, but since I live in Japan, and if I ship myself I have a storeroom here, it seems more logical.
I’ll check out the links.
I notice that you have the option of not using Shopify Payments. Is there a reason some stores decide not to do so? Are Shopify Payments processing fees higher?
Thanks.
Hey, @douglerner !
I’m helping Erin out with some replies today. Thank you for sharing that context! It definitely sounds like opening an online store for your Japanese business would make sense and be a great choice.
To answer your questions, some stores choose to opt out of Shopify Payments due to having a prohibited business type (you can find more information in the Shopify Payments Terms of Service), having an existing relationship with another payment gateway, or simply because of a personal preference. Shopify Payments has very competitive fees, and you can check out our pricing page and click “Compare plan features” to view the rates for each plan.
I definitely recommend Shopify Payments! It is the simplest way to accept payments online, as it eliminates the hassle of setting up a third-party payment provider. With Shopify Payments you’re automatically set up to accept all major payment methods as soon as you create your Shopify store. Feel free to check out our help document to learn more.
