Email WITH PDF-file attachment to customer

Topic summary

Main issue: Merchants want to email customers with a PDF attachment directly from Shopify, but there is no native attachment feature in Shopify’s customer emails/notifications.

Workarounds shared:

  • Use Shopify’s free Digital Downloads app to deliver a PDF after checkout (set the file as a $0 product so the customer receives the file via email after providing an address).
  • Use an email marketing app/service to send automated emails based on rules (e.g., post-purchase), potentially delivering the file.
  • Upload a static file to Store content and insert its download link into Shopify Notifications; this mimics an attachment and keeps emails small.
  • For dynamic PDFs (e.g., invoices): use OrderPrinterPro to generate a downloadable invoice link, or build a custom app that generates/stores the file externally and injects the link into order data and emails.

Other apps: Wire (sell PDFs, URLs, other digital files; 14-day trial).

Tone/outcome: Multiple users express frustration about the missing “basic” attachment feature. No official solution or native change; thread remains open with consensus on links/third‑party apps as current options.

Hi,

I need to send emails to customers with pdf-file attachment.

I was wondering how? It seems there is no option to send messages to customers. Text only. Is there any workaround?

Thanks for your help.

Hi @usx !

You can opt to send PDF style email attachments to your customers using our very own free app Digital Downloads - explore more here. The file is set up like a product, but you can assign a price of $0 to it, and customers will be required to enter their email address at checkout before receiving the PDF attachment.

Alternatively, if you are using an email marketing service, you can set up an automated email that goes out to your customer dependent on specific rules. We have many of those types of apps listed here if you wanted to have a look.

By the way, how are things on the rest of your website going? Just so you know, we are not only here to help with technical queries, but also to help you grow your business. If you need any marketing advice or how to get more traffic or sales to your store, just ask!

Hi,

You can sell PDFs, URLs and other kinds of digital files through our app - Wire. One of the most economical, comprehensive apps out there for this use

We currently have a 14-day trial for our new customers.

Apparently people don’t read questions properly. I also have this same problem and I can’t find a solution assuming there is one.

This is in every basic email application so not having the ability to attach files in an email is dumb Shopify!

Exactly, mate. It is absolutely ■■■■■■■■, that there´s no simple attachment function.. For what damn reason?..

@sean815 you could also upload a file to your store content and add the download link into the Notifications. From the user perspective, this works equally good as an attachment and reduces the email size.

@Finer this works only for static files and still its just a link to that file, right?

is there a way to attach a dynamic file (like pdf invoice) to the purchase confirmation email?

@sean815 and all the rest. The only solution that i found is to create a custom app that will generate/store a file externally. Having that file link, add it to the orders custom information, then in the confirmation email pass it as text/link.

@luszym yes only for static files. If you like to add a link to an invoice, you can use OderPrinterPro. The app will create an invoice for the customers, they can download.
