Thank you for reaching out to the community forums with your question! I know that this can be a stressful thing to consider and I want to assure you that our older themes will not be depreciated.
Each store owns their own code and the basic framework for theme files on Shopify still fully supports the older style themes. While there a lot of benefits to upgrading your theme file to a newer version it is not mandatory at all. I generally do recommend that if a merchant is using a theme file that is over 2-3 years old to consider updating to a newer version. This is to ensure stability as troubleshooting older themes gets more difficult the older they get and newer apps may not integrate as well on old theme frameworks.
Please rest assured that we have no current plans to depreciate older themes on the Shopify platform and your merchant’s don’t need to worry!
