How can I fit product images with varying original formats into a rectangular (1:1) ratio without distorting or cropping the image, while still maintaining the layout and functionality of the image gallery. The images I want fixed are in the “Product information” component on the product page.

I also have this very same issue! Would really appreciate an answer to this. Surprised that this isn’t a standard feature to (what looks like) the Dawn theme.

I suggest you uploading images already in 1:1 ratio format by editing them with an image editor. Make the canvas square add fill it with white.
We have considered this option but, as we import the images via script and cannot easily control their ratio without a massive manual effort, we would prefer a CSS solution in Shopify to avoid any editing of the images.
