Fraud detection message to customer prior to processing payment

Once customer payments are processed, a fraud alert shows on the order when a billing address doesn’t match the credit card registered address, leaving the Shopify store owner to deal with reaching out to the customer to analyze and verify this. Is there a way for the Shopify payment system to not allow the customer to submit the order if the billing address doesn’t match? In other words, let the customer know he must enter a verified billing address before the order is processed.

Hi @PBOutfitters , this is a great question to ask. What payment gateway are you using on your store? The security settings available will change based on that.

If you are using Shopify Payments, you can manage the settings for the payment gateway and enable AVS Postal Code Verification. This does not always work though as the option for AVS verification is setup by the issuers bank and not forced by the checkout experience.

Address Verification Service (AVS) is an optional fraud-prevention tool offered by issuing banks whereby a cardholder’s address is submitted as part of the transaction authorization. Learn more here: Address Verification Service (AVS) Definition.

For additional restrictions on what orders can be completed at the checkout you can look into a fraud protection app. They can assist in automatically declining orders based on a range of settings: Best Fraud apps for 2022 on Shopify App Store.

You need to enable AVS verification:

Settings > Payments > look for ‘Manage’ under Shopify Payments > Fraud Prevention. After that, simply check the following “Decline charges that fail AVS postal code verification”.

As @Shay has mentioned, you have the option to auto decline payments using the AVS postal Code verification if you are having a big issue with this. However, if you want a chance to review the order and verify the customer, a third-party fraud prevention app like Beacon is better suited for the job to prevent turning down potential good customers. I’m happy to answer any questions regarding the workflow.

The AVS system doesn’t seem to work. We set it up in our store, and the transactions still pass. Doing a manual review doesn’t help either, especially when ALL your orders are flagged, and Payments are quick to hold your funds. More has to be done to protect sellers on the platform, we are on our own here.
