GitHub integration improvements

Topic summary

Requests to improve Shopify’s GitHub integration:

  • Add author information to commit descriptions (in addition to the shop) to identify exactly who made each change and improve accountability.
  • Provide granular control over what Shopify pushes to the repository (e.g., limit to configuration and translation files) to reduce noise.

Rationale:

  • With many editors modifying content via the theme editor and editing theme files directly, it’s hard to debug changes; current commit messages are redundant and missing authorship details.

Status/outcome:

  • No decisions or official response. The thread presents user-backed suggestions and remains open.

Hi,

Shopify could make improvements to GitHub integration. First of all commits description should include not only shop, but author of changes. So we could know who exactly made changes. Second thing is that we should have more control over what is pushed from shopify, eg. only config and translations.

I would also love to see something like this. Having 20 editors changing content within the theme editor and also have access to edit the theme files directly in shopify is really hard to debug, who made which changes. And the commit messages are really redundant and not really helpful. (because its missing the author e.g.)
