Google Ads event Thursday

Topic summary

A merchant is struggling with Google Ads budget requirements and campaign performance issues:

Core Problem:

  • Daily budget is too high to afford, yet current affordable budget generates zero impressions
  • Only Performance Max campaigns receive impressions, but traffic quality is poor
  • Considering switching search ads from clicks-based to impressions-based bidding (as suggested by Google AI)

Expert Response (Emmanuel from FeedArmy):

  • Recommended checking Google Merchant Center for product approval status and diagnostic issues
  • Suggested reviewing product feed data quality and attributes
  • Proposed setting up standard shopping campaigns with advanced targeting to control costs and improve relevance
  • Emphasized that product data optimization is critical for performance

Current Status:
The merchant found the initial response unhelpful and reiterated their budget constraints. The discussion remains unresolved, with the key question being whether to switch bidding strategies or pursue alternative solutions to make campaigns viable within their budget limitations.

My google ads require a daily budget that is too high for me to get any impressions whatsoever. This is ridiculous. Only Performance Max campaign gets impressions and these are low quality. What to do???

Hello Murray, thank you for your question and for joining the Shopify AMA. My name is Emmanuel, founder of FeedArmy, and your host for today’s AMA.

So there are a couple of points you highlight and my answer might not directly explain your question as it’s a little unclear what your issues are, but I will do my best to answer. I will answer in multiple ways to cover in several scenarios that I am guessing you are referring to. If this doesn’t answer your question, do provide more details, specific information etc.

When you say your daily budget is too high, and you mention get any impressions whatsoever. If you are saying you have a high budget assigned to your campaign, but are not getting any impressions. Then this can mean a few things.

The most obvious issue I recommend you look at, is if you have products approved for shopping ads (not just free listings), to check this, go to Google Merchant Center > Products.

Also check if you have issues or not, if yes fix them first. Check here : https://merchants.google.com/mc/products/diagnostics

And check here: https://merchants.google.com/mc/products/diagnostics/accountissues

But I could also interpret your first sentence as you have been spending too much, but that seems to counter the point you are saying get any impressions whatsoever.

Now to your second point, only performance max gets impressions and these are low quality.

So performance max is a campaign, that kind of targets everything, if it is relevant to what you sell. This means both generic and relevant traffic.

So if you are saying all is low quality.

Then I recommend you setup standard shopping campaigns using an advanced setup. Allowing you to target specific search terms. This more advanced control allows you to avoid wasting budget.

Also make sure you improve every attribute you submit in Google Merchant Center, even if you submit all data from your website, you will still need to improve your data, to maximize your performance. To find all the attributes, have a look here: https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/7052112?hl=en

Now, if the above does not answer your question, please provide more details what you need guidance with. Also remember advertising is big. Just listing products is not enough to have great results. And also check out all my other videos, there is a lot of guidance I provide to help you improve your performance.

Your response is not helpful. To repeat: My google ads require a daily budget that is too high for me. My current daily budget gets no impressions whatsoever. But it is all I can afford. This is ridiculous. Only Performance Max campaign gets impressions and these are low quality. What to do??? Should I switch my search ads from clicks to impressions? That’s what Google A.I. tells me to do
