How can I add a custom field to the customer registration form?

Hello everyone,

I need to add a custom field in the customer registration form.

In particular, my shop is located in Italy so when an italian customer register I need him to write down his VAT (if is a business) or his national insurance number (if is a private). If the customer is not italian this field is not mandatory.

I know that the checkout cart page is not editable through coding, but I wanted to know if the customer/register page code is editable and how can be enabled in the administration panel, since I would need this information for future orders.

Do you have any solutions otherwise to suggest me without changing my Shopify plan from basic to plus or any paying app? I would rather prefer an expert coder that would solve me this issue.
