This is Summer from the Social Care team at Shopify. Thanks for your question!
At the moment, it’s not possible to edit the URLs on your website. The reason behind this is that Shopify is built on a development tool called Ruby on Rails, which uses paths to pull information from the admin. This method keeps everything clean, speedy, and visually digestible. The only part of the URL that can be customized is the handle, which is the text that comes after /collections/. This can be done by going to the Search engine listing preview section of the page you are editing.
You may find this section in multiple areas of your admin. The areas and the steps to get there are listed below.
Product page1. Go to Products > All products
Click the title of the product you want to edit
Scroll down to **Search engine listing preview
Click Edit website SEO
Collection page1. Go to Products > Collections
Click the title of the collection you want to edit
Scroll down to **Search engine listing preview
Click Edit website SEO
Blogs1. Go to Online Store > Blog posts
Click Manage blogs at the top of the page
Select the blog you want to edit
Click Edit website SEO in the **Search engine listing preview section
Blog posts1. Go to Online Store > Blog posts
Click the blog post you want to edit
Select the blog you want to edit
Click Edit website SEO in the **Search engine listing preview section
While the ability to edit the URL structure is not available, I completely understand the need for this in tailoring the language of your website, so I’m glad to submit this feedback to our development team. It’s not an immediate and guaranteed solution, however, we do consider your suggestions when we release updates in our platform. Updates will be published on our Shopify Changelog page.
While we’re on the topic of editing your URLs, this is a good time to discuss or explore Search Engine Optimization (SEO). If you’re unfamiliar with this, SEO is the process of enhancing the quality of your website for the purpose of improving its visibility in search engines such as Google or Bing. This is one of the most effective ways to get traffic in your store. When your website has a high ranking on search engines, it will likely appear on the first page of the search results, making it more accessible to the large volume of visitors and users of search engines.
Now, the Search engine listing preview section exists in the admin to give you the ability to work on your SEO; and enter keywords that search engines can associate with the content of your website. If you have not done this yet, take some time to look at the meta title and meta description in the search engine listing preview, and make sure it’s relevant to the content of the page. This information will appear on the search results, so it’s beneficial to make it accurate and concise. This way viewers see what the page is about at a glance, and are likely enticed to click on the link to your page. Feel free to read through this blog post for more tips on how to write the meta title and description with the intent to increase traffic in your store.
Optimizing the meta title and description of your pages is only one way to improve your SEO. I recommend looking into the other techniques if you want to boost the traffic in your store further. This checklist discusses everything about improving SEO in-depth so do take some time to go over it if you’re interested.
I hope this helps! If you have any questions about SEO or your website, don’t hesitate to respond to this post.
Jumping onto this question. How does the handle get populated in the first place from initial setup? We would like the handle to be description of the product instead of what it is now. We can’t figure out what is populating the handle at initial setup. Thanks in advance
Help and Advice Please (Search Engine Listing URL) enhancing SEO for My Website
When I import my product from my supplier. All the fields for the product are populated
I go to the Product>All Products> select the product> Scroll to Search Engine Listing
The URL is as follows; WebsiteName.com › products › ProductHandle
However, This product has been moved to a collection or other similar products have been joined into one listing with variants.
So The URL in the Search Engine Listing section should correspond to the URL of the Product in its collection. which should be:
WebsiteName,com › collections > Name Of The Collection > Products › ProductHandleDesc
This is what comes up in the address bar of my browser when I click on my product.
Unfortunately The URL in the Search Engine Listing section still reads WebsiteName.com › products › ProductHandle
When you edit it (SEL section) you can only edit back to Products > YOU CAN EDIT AFTER THIS BUT NOT BEFORE
BUT What is required for correct URL is to add Collection > Collection Name before Product so it would read as follows
Website Name,com > Collection > Collection Name > product > Product Handle
Can anybody tell me How to do this?
If it cant be done. What are we to do in the Search Engine Listing section get better SEO. and to be found in search engines if the URL here is wrong.
