How can I fix duplicate meta descriptions on my product pages?

Hi everyone,

I checked a few of my pages and it came out that over 500 pages have duplicated Meta Des.

I checked those Meta descriptions and changed them a long time ago on Shopify (products section), but for some reason they are still there.

This page for instance has a different meta description, but when I check it I see the one I was alerted about:

https://sugarfreeeu.com/products/diablo-zuckerfreie-erdbeer-sahne-bonbons

“”

This drives me nuts. I already paid for someone to fix it and he didn’t really do anything. I want to solve it by myself. Please help

thank you in advance.

Hi @Eli90

Thank you for those details. I understand you have some issues with your product meta descriptions not showing up accurately.

I can see as well on the product page you shared that the meta description is the same as the one you shared here. Can you clarify where you are seeing the incorrect meta description? That will help me provide you with the best next steps.

Hi Shay,

thank you for replying.
I’m referring to the open praph <meta property="og:description (click on view page source). I have many pages that have the same description / title.

The description on Google is updated and on Shopify as well, but I don’t know who to change these ones and I have over 500

Okay, thank you for those additional details. I pulled up a couple products randomly but wasn’t able to see the duplicated meta property= og description. I’ll share some samples of what I am seeing on my end. Can you share a few other product pages with me and confirm what you are seeing in the og description when using the inspect tool?

Hi,

let’s start with these first to see if it works. How can we change it ?

Hi @Shay ,

thank you again. What I meant was that 2 pages have the same meta property= og description

for instance these 2 pages:
https://sugarfreeeu.com/products/diablo-pralinenschachtel-delight-zuckerfrei

https://sugarfreeeu.com/products/diablo-pralinenschachtel-luxury-ohne-zuckerzusatz

both have:

I changed it on Shopify, but nothing happens here. At the beginning I thought it might be related to time.. but for many pages I can already see the change on Google.

Thank you for the links, I feel like this may be an issue that has been coded into the theme file directly. And I’ll share why I think that:

OG Meta descriptions (ENGLISH) - When using the language switcher on the page, the English versions of the page have different og descriptions for the meta property. Can you confirm if these match the meta descriptions each page should have, just translated?

OG Meta descriptions (German) - The OG descriptions are the same, which is incorrect.

Suggested next steps

Contact Shopify Theme Support: I can see you are using the Dawn theme, which is a free theme provided by Shopify. I would recommend reaching out to our support team to see if this is something our theme support can review for you. If it is related to 3rd party changes to the theme code, then they may not be able to assist, but it would be worth connecting with them to find out. I would share this thread with your support advisor for additional context as it can be difficult to explain.

Try a fresh copy of the Dawn theme to see if the issue is replicated there (tells us if it is a coding/app issue or something else)

Are the products on different page templates?

Is it possible that the coding for the page template in use on the products with incorrect og meta descriptions was altered to apply the specific description to all products using it?

Hi @Shay thank you very much!

I’m in contact with them, they will try to help.

Btw, in case I would like to solve this issue by myself to save time and to learn something for the future…In which folder do you think that I can find the code that causes this?

Hi @Eli90

I am not a trained developer myself so I can’t be 100% sure on this. I definitely recommend using the built in search feature in the theme code to search for keywords that would be used in the theme file. Either words specifically in the description or words like “meta”.

This will pull up any theme sections that have that text inside of it. You will also be able to see which files have been edited and are changed as well, they will show a circular dot to the left of the theme file section.

Before making any changes to your theme code, please ensure you are duplicating your theme file as a safe backup point and are not working on the live theme directly (so as not to interfere with the customer experience). You should be able to test all changes in the theme code editor before publishing.
