How can I fix the connection error and move my domain away from Etsy?

Forgive me if this isn’t posted in the correct place. I bought my domain name through Etsy/Pattern - I managed to get it redirected to my Shopify (Cname, etc) but it says the domain is still managed by Etsy and when I use the website link it says it’s an error.

My domain name renews in June - what can I do - if anything - to fix the connection error and move the domain name away from Etsy?

Would it be possible to provide a screenshot of the exact error you are seeing on your Shopify store with this domain? A screenshot of the Settings > Domains section of your admin would also be beneficial for troubleshooting purposes. Feel free to share the domain URL itself here, and I can take a closer look at the setup to see if all looks OK.

Have you connected the domain to your Shopify store as per this guide here? As well as connecting the domain via your Shopify admin, you will also need to edit the DNS settings of the domain to reflect the following requirements:

  • A Record: Pointed to the Shopify IP address 23.227.38.65. If necessary, change the Host name to the @ symbol. Delete any other A records on the domain if there are any present.
  • CNAME: Point the CNAME record with the name www to shops.myshopify.com.

If you have already completed these steps, then it’s possible the DNS changes have not fully propagated yet. DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to fully propagate, so the changes you made might still be propagating. If it was done recently then you may need to simply give it some time and try again later.

Perhaps you were hoping to transfer the domain away from Etsy/Pattern, so that you can manage the domain via your Shopify store, and no longer have Etsy/Pattern as your third-party domain host? If so, there are more steps involved in addition to connecting the domain as explained above. We have more info here on this page, but let me know if there are any steps you are not fully understanding.
