How can I recover money from a possible scam on a Shopify seller account?

Hii

I saw an add on Facebook and clicked the link, then the link redirected to a Shopify seller account shope-now-ac60.myshopify.com”. That was a website selling dress items and I have ordered co-ords and the payment is done at the same time. I was expecting a mail confirmation but have not received any confirmation.

Then I felt like a scam and I contacted Shopify. Then they collected more information from me and I got a mail with a link from Shopify to send a detailed complaint. That was today 2nd JULY and when I checked the site for more information, it’s not showing and the website vanishes.

My concern is if shopify cant promise a safe purchase experience then how people think to change the shopping from Amazon & Flipkart which provides safe shopping experience.

Kindly let me know if there is any option to get my money back.

Thanks & Regards

It’s unlikely you’ll get your money back from Shopify, since the probable opinion and indeed the obligation in law is not for Shopify to provide any means of recompense. Shopify creates and maintains a platform that bakes in various checks to ensure bad actors can’t (relatively) easy just setup shop and scam people.

Having said that it’s virtually impossible to prevent against such bad actors if they are willing enough.

If thieves stole your phone then made off in a Mercedes would you expect Mercedes to reimburse you? Whilst that scenario seems a million miles away the overall premise is not dissimilar to what’s occurred in your situation. Shopify, like Mercedes have simply being the vehicle, the tool, used by bad actors to commit the crime.

Your best course of recompense is via your bank. If you paid on credit card you will probably have even more chance of obtaining your money back, if you paid by debit / bank card then you should initiate a chargeaback via contacting your bank right away.

If you sent money via PayPal then you need to open a dispute with them

If you sent money via bacs or similar then it’s very unlikely you’ll see your money again.

For the record, Shopify don’t promise a safe shopping experience and nor do Amazon or Flipkart as it would be impossible to do so but they all undertake as reasonable steps as they can to promote a safe shopping experience.

But there’s a difference about the positioning of Shopify vs Amazon/Flipkart in that the latter two underwrite the risk of the sellers on their Platform and directly list and sell the products the consumer is buying whilst shopify are developers that build the framework that allows customers to provide a web-shop which then list the products offered to consumers - there’s a distinct difference you seem to be overlooking in your mind.
