How can I remove variant images from my product page?

Topic summary

Issue: In the Shopify Boundless theme, product pages were showing all variant images and very large photos, and the requester wanted only the currently selected variant’s image shown (especially problematic on desktop). A “variant” is a product option (e.g., color/weight) with its own image.

Troubleshooting: A helper requested the store link and clarified whether the issue was the persistent second photo in the main media area or the full gallery of thumbnails below (shared screenshots). The requester confirmed both should be hidden unless tied to the selected variant.

Outcome: The helper later observed the store had been updated and now matched the desired behavior (only the selected variant’s image visible). Resolution achieved.

Recommendations: Fill the “About us” section and link it in the main menu to build trust. Add social media links in Online store > Themes > Customize > Theme settings > Social media, since footer icons lacked URLs.

For future readers: Another participant shared that hiding unselected variant images can be done via custom code or an app and linked a detailed how-to blog. Status: Resolved.

Hi, I’m using the boundless theme and for every product that has a variant, the product page includes the photos of all of the variants instead of just the variant that is selected. The photos are also very large. Can someone please explain to me how to make my product pages only display the one image for each variant? Thank you.

Hi @chaingangdiscs .

Thank you for your message, I would be happy to offer you some suggestions.

Can I start by asking for a link to your shop? I believe I understand exactly what you mean, however, a link to your shop will help in troubleshooting. This may be something that our themes team can help you out with, however, I would need to clarify that by taking a look at your variant options directly.

Thank’s again for your message and I hope to hear from you soon!

Thank you, Marty.

my shop is www.chain-gang-discs.com

And here’s a link to one of my listed products with variants.

The desktop view specifically looks really bad.

Thank you for your help

Hi @chaingangdiscs .

Thanks for providing me with your store link.

I really enjoyed looking through your website, these look like some really awesome products. I am a little sad I wasn’t aware of your shop at the beginning of summer, I would have been zooming these things around into September. In regards to your question, I must admit, I am still a bit confused. Are you referring to the product option that remains the same when you switch variants here:

Or do you mean all the products that show up below the product and variant options:

Feel free to reach back out here with that clarification, I will be happy to take a closer look!

Marty,

I was actually talking about both things you mentioned. What I’d like is to have only the photo of the variant that is selected at the time.

In the first example you provided, I don’t want that second photo there that remains the same. In the second example, I would rather not have all of the other photos below. Please let me know if you need any further clarification. Thanks!

Hey @chaingangdiscs .

Thank you for your message and for clarifying that.

It looks like you already figured this out, as I noticed you have updated your page, this looks really fantastic now and see exactly what you were going for.

I also love the You may also like section, this is a great touch:

I did notice the About us section in your footer was empty, are you still working on writing this? An about section is a great idea for you to provide more information for your customers about your brand and product to help build trust and retention with your customers. I would love to provide you with our helpful guide here, which walks through tips for writing an effective About page that may offer some good suggestions. Once you finish this, I would also suggest linking it in your main-menu area as well to give your customers that quick access:

I also see that you have a social media are in your footer without any links to your Instagram or Facebook page.

If you have a Facebook and Instagram page for your shop, I would recommend adding them to your footer. Since you mentioned using our Boundless theme, you can do this under Online store>Themes>Customize>Theme Settings and then clicking Social Media and adding the links directly.

I am glad you were able to get your variants set up as you wanted and I hope these further suggestions help you out further. Please do not hesitate to reach back out here with any questions you may have, we are always happy to chat!

Hi @chaingangdiscs I see this is an old post and hope you have already solved problem. I wanted to share a solution from people coming from search. It is possible to hide unselected variant images by using custom coding or app solution. Here is the detailed blog post I wrote on this topic.
