How can I sort products using a Date Metafield in Dawn 6.0 theme?

I am using a “Date” Metafield and unable to add it to the filters section under “Navigation,” as it is not shown as an option. I am using Dawn 6.0 theme.

I would also like to have the option to sort product listing using this field but unsure where to adjust the code for that.
