How can I turn off automatic variant selection on my page?

Shopify automatically selects the first variant. I have a add to cart button that goes with the page. When costumers read through the page, they can add the item to the cart at the bottom and don’t have to go back to the top. But instead of going to variant selection, it always adds the pre-selected variant. How should I fix this?

Hey, @jjjwwwzzz !

This is Summer from the Social Care team at Shopify. Welcome to Shopify Community!

If your theme doesn’t have a built-in setting that disables the automatic selection of the first variant on your product pages, coding customization needs to be done to achieve this.

You can follow our tutorial for this customization on this page if you’re comfortable with coding and if you’re using a vintage Shopify theme. Make sure to create a backup of your current theme before making any changes so you can easily revert it to the original version if there is a need to. We have a guide on duplicating themes on this page.

If you’re uncomfortable with coding and you’re using a vintage Shopify theme, we can take a look at it and see if the customization can be carried out by our Themes team using design time. Design time entitles you to 60 minute’s worth of supported customizations on a Shopify theme when you’re on a paid plan. If you would like to see if the tutorial can be done by our Themes team, you can visit https://bit.ly/3cJkx8V and create a support request.

Now, if the customization can’t be done by our Themes team on your vintage Shopify theme, or you have a third-party theme that doesn’t have the variant selection setting; or you’re using an Online Store 2.0 theme, you can hire a Shopify Expert for customization services. You can browse through the Experts on this page or you can post a job by clicking Create a job on the same page so Experts can reach out to you.

There’s a third-party theme that has a built-in setting for disabling the automatic selection of variants. Besides having coding customization done, you can also add the Empire theme to your store instead. This guide will show you how to use the variant selection setting. Should you need assistance with the Empire theme, you may contact their support team by following the steps below.

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Themes.
  2. Beside the theme in question, click Customize
  3. Click the ellipsis or the three dots on the left side of the header.
  4. Select Get support

Adjusting this small but significant detail in your store is such a great way to improve customer experience. In addition to this, there are plenty of other ways to further optimize the product pages so they bring in sales. If you’re looking for ideas, this blog post shares valuable strategies for making the most of your product pages. Feel free to go over it to boost the conversion in your store!

I hope this helps. Should you have any questions about anything discussed, please don’t hesitate to respond to this post.
