Hey shopify people! Im trying to figure out how gift card work at checkout. So I have created a new gift card and I guess the field at checkout to use gift card appears after its purchased. But Where are the fields for the receiver of the gift card like email or phone number? When one is buying it for the other one and knows only their email or phone number to be delivered to - so where are those fields appear? or is it suppose to be shipping form details? Thank you for help!
Hi @RomanR
This is Kate from PageFly - Landing page builder, I’d like to suggest this idea:
When purchasing a gift card on Shopify, the recipient’s information is typically collected in the checkout process. The recipient’s information can include the recipient’s name, email address, and/or shipping address (if physical gift card is being purchased). This information is usually collected in a form that appears during the checkout process and can be filled out by the person purchasing the gift card. If you’re not seeing fields for the recipient’s information at checkout, you can check the gift card product’s configuration in the Shopify admin to ensure that the appropriate fields have been added and are set to be visible during checkout.
Hope my answer will help you
thank you so much for replying Kate, but I havent seen any configurations in gift card as a product itself, but by default is it meant to be a physical card or digital. I though its a digital gift card…
Hi @RomanR
Shopify supports both physical and digital gift cards. By default, Shopify gift cards are digital, meaning that the recipient will receive a code that can be redeemed for the value of the gift card during checkout.
If you would like to sell physical gift cards, you’ll need to select “Physical product” as the product type, and make sure that you have shipping information set up in your Shopify store. When a customer purchases a physical gift card, they will have the option to enter the recipient’s shipping information during checkout.
If you need further assistance, please don’t hesitate to ask
Hi Roman,
Shopify does not offer the sending of digital gift cards directly to a recipient email.
Our app, Gift Card Pro, offers this in a really simple way: https://apps.shopify.com/gift-card-pro
With Gift Card Pro, your customer can send a gift card direct to their recipient via email or text, and add gifting information on top.
Please let me know if you would like to go over anything!

Shopify does offer this feature now; however, your theme must have the added feature. See this page on how to turn that feature on https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-store/themes/customizing-themes/add-gift-card-recipient-fields#enable-the-recipient-information-form. This feature is included in the latest free Shopify templates, such as Dawn.
However, I can’t find any information on adding this to an existing theme that does not have it. Does anyone know?
Following to see if anyone has an answer on how to add this to an existing theme that doesn’t have the functionality.
I am also having this issue. I can get the recipient form to display on the product page but the data doesn’t attach to the card when it’s added to cart.
Shopify, we could really use some documentation here.
thanks god my theme has it.
what theme are you using? I don’t seem to have the option with the Dawn theme.
It is absolutely insane that part of Shopify’s system isn’t the selling of digital gift cards for your own store. This makes almost no sense. I understand there are apps that will do this but they cost as much a month as your likely to sell in gift cards every month.
Hi RomanR,
i hope you have solved the problem, if not, try consider below:
When a customer purchases a gift card on Shopify, the fields for the recipient’s email or phone number don’t appear by default. Instead, the gift card is sent to the purchaser, who can then forward it to the recipient. To collect recipient details directly, you can use an app like “Gift Card Pro” or “Rise.ai” from the Shopify App Store. These apps allow you to add fields for the recipient’s email or phone number during the purchase process, making it easier to send the gift card directly to the intended recipient.
Thanks alot.
I appreciate the info but these apps cost money. I do not want to pay $10-20 a month for gift card services when I might not even sell that much in a months time.
