I am creating a Dropshipping/Print on demand store. I have my store set for ‘free shipping’. I’ll be adjusting the price of my items to compensate for the shipping. I am using Oberlo to find items on Ali Express.
Just to make sure I’m seeing things the way I need to, when I select an item and it takes me to the item in Ali Express. Is the shipping price I see on that page the same price I will be charged when the item is sold in my store?
That’s a great question! Free shipping is definitely the recommended approach when dropshipping. It’s a great marketing strategy and easy to set up!
One thing to keep in mind, is the AliExpress shipping charge is not imported to your Oberlo/Shopify account. This means you need to price your products accordingly to ensure you are not only covering the shipping cost in the sale, but also turning a profit.
To get to the route of your question, suppliers on AliExpress will charge different shipping rates for different locations, as well as product prices. For example, a supplier might charge $5 per product with $1 shipping for United States customers. However, for that same product they could be charging $8 per product with $5 shipping to a customer in Brazil.
For this reason, when starting out we don’t recommend shipping worldwide as the costs fluctuate greatly. Instead, target countries like the United States and Canada, so you are easily able to determine the potential cost.
To check the rates set by your supplier, simply open the product in AliExpress and scroll down to the shipping cost. Click the shipping rate and from the drop down list select the country you intend to ship to. This will show you the shipping cost to that region. Use this cost, along with the product cost to markup your products. We recommend a markup of 3-4x.
