How to close a "partially paid" order without accepting or refunding payment

I had an item that was sized incorrectly when the customer ordered it. I notified them, they agreed to pay $17 less for a smaller size. I accepted payment for the full amount minus $17 and Shopify’s help-bot told me the order would go away at the end of the month.

But now the order shows as “partially paid” and I constantly have a “1” notification on my orders. If I say “Collect Payment”, Shopify will think I have collected the $17 and my accounting will be off. I also don’t want to do anything that will send any kind of notification to the customer.

  1. Visit the specific order and press “Edit”.
  2. Under “Edit order”, apply a $17 discount.
  3. List the reason as “Sized incorrectly” or leave this field blank.
  4. This reason will be displayed to the customer in their Customer Account or via the order confirmation email.
  5. You could leave this field blank if you’d like.

This should remove the “partially paid” status and also reflect the agreed-upon adjustment properly.
