Yet another post about the new package type section for physical products. I just realized that I already calculated the rate of the parcel packaging with EACH of the 2000+ products I have listed as part of the item rate. I do NOT need this feature. However, I can NOT turn it off. I devised a “quick fix” for this problem but I wasted close to two hours on this nonsense.
Topic summary
Shopify introduced a mandatory package size/dimensions feature for physical products that cannot be disabled. The original poster has 2000+ products already configured with weights and shipping costs built into item prices, making this new feature redundant and time-consuming.
Key concerns:
- No toggle to turn off the feature until sellers are ready to implement it
- Risk of automatic dimension data importing to shipping providers (ShipStation, Pirate Ship) causing issues if product data isn’t updated
- Manual updates required for thousands of products to avoid “missing dimensions” errors
Current workarounds:
- Copy/paste shipping addresses manually instead of using integrations
- Bulk edit or CSV import placeholder dimensions to stop system prompts
- Rely on shipping apps’ default box settings, which often override product-level dimensions anyway
Status: The feature doesn’t break checkout when left blank and still uses weight as before. Both participants agree Shopify should provide an opt-out toggle for stores with existing functional setups. The discussion remains open with hope for future flexibility.
To further clarify I should have the option to turn this feature OFF until I am ready to implement it properly.
Additionally, I have the sneaky suspicion that when one imports address data into their preferred shipping provider (Ship Station, Pirate Ship, whatever) it will now also provide the parcel size automatically. Which is great if everything is accurate, but for those sellers who have a LOT of products to update now they have manually the parcel size for a LOT of their orders until they fix parcel weight & size info for their products. Currently I just cut and paste the shipping address so I don’t have to worry about this problem right now.
Hello @stickfiguredist ,
Yeah, this one’s been driving me nuts too. I already had all my products set up with weights, and now Shopify drops this package size thing in with no way to just shut it off. I don’t need it, and I definitely don’t have time to go back and update a couple thousand products just to keep Shopify happy.
The annoying part is, it’s not even breaking checkout if you leave it blank. It still uses weight the same as before. The only time it really bites is if you’re pushing orders into ShipStation/Pirate Ship/etc and you suddenly have “missing dimensions” showing up. Right now I just keep cutting/pasting addresses like I was before so I don’t have to deal with it.
Couple things that helped me:
You can bulk edit or CSV import some fake dimensions if you just want Shopify to stop nagging you.
Shipping apps usually let you set a default box anyway, so half the time those product-level dimensions aren’t even being used.
Still feels like something they should’ve given us a toggle for though. Not every store needs this feature right away, and forcing it across the board just eats time for people who already had working setups.
Hey,
Thank you for offering your solutions to this problem. Who knows, maybe Shopify will allow us to turn off this feature in the near future.
