If you could change one thing about Shopify tomorrow, what would it be?

Every day we work with Shopify merchants and developers, and one theme keeps coming up: as powerful as Shopify is, there are always small (and sometimes big) features we wish worked differently.

For example, many merchants want more flexibility with discounts — like being able to exclude certain collections or stop discounts stacking on sale items — without needing yet another paid app. Others get frustrated with shipping profiles not syncing perfectly with print-on-demand services, or with duties/taxes showing up incorrectly at checkout. And developers often wish the admin had more direct control over customization without endless workarounds.

Shopify is constantly evolving, but it’s clear there’s always room for improvement.

So here’s my question for you:

:backhand_index_pointing_right: If you had the power to change just ONE thing about Shopify tomorrow, what would it be — and how would it help your store or workflow?

I’d love to hear from both merchants and developers. Sometimes the best ideas come directly from the people using Shopify every single day.

Best,

Daniel

If I could change one thing about Shopify tomorrow, it would be to enhance its native multi-store management capabilities. Today, many merchants operating across multiple regions, brands, or customer segments are required to use third-party apps or develop custom workarounds to manage separate storefronts. This adds complexity, increases costs, and creates operational inefficiencies.

By introducing a more robust, centralized system to manage multiple storefronts from a single admin while allowing for localization of content, pricing, inventory, and promotions. I chose this as the one change because it directly impacts scalability and operational efficiency two critical factors for any business looking to grow sustainably in a competitive e-commerce landscape.

Hi everyone :waving_hand:,

If I could change just one thing about Shopify tomorrow, it would be more granular discount controls built directly into the native Discounts dashboard — no extra apps required.

Right now, most merchants I work with struggle when they want to:

  • Exclude certain collections or product types from a site-wide discount,

  • Prevent stacking of automatic discounts with manual discount codes,

  • Or run “Buy X Get Y” promos only on selected variants.

Being able to do all of that in one place — with a simple toggle for “exclude sale items,” “exclude specific tags/collections,” etc. — would save hours of setup and reduce conflicts with third-party apps.

It would also help developers because we wouldn’t need so many custom scripts or hidden metafields just to get discounts behaving properly.

What about you? If you could wave a magic wand over Shopify, what would you fix first?

Here’s a polished version you can use as your answer — it feels engaging, professional, and invites conversation:

Right now, merchants have to juggle apps or settle for workarounds just to do things like:

  • Exclude certain products or collections

  • Prevent discounts from stacking on already discounted items

  • Offer tiered discounts without messy overlap

Having this natively in Shopify would save money on apps, reduce errors at checkout, and give merchants more confidence when running promotions.

For developers, it would mean fewer “hacks” and custom scripts to maintain — freeing up time for more meaningful customizations.

Discounts touch almost every store, so making them more powerful and flexible would be a game-changer for both merchants and devs.
