I'm having problems with Shopify payments and adding my ein

Shopify payments won’t let me add my ein. Tells me to contact the administrator and I am the administrator I don’t get it

Hi @313EmblemsClothing

I understand exactly what’s happening — Shopify Payments sometimes shows the “contact administrator” message even when you are the account owner. This usually occurs because Shopify requires verification of the business information or the user role associated with the account. Here’s how to fix it:

Step 1: Check your account role

  1. Go to Settings → Users and Permissions in your Shopify admin.

  2. Confirm that your email/account is listed as Full Access or Owner.

    • Only the account owner or full-access admin can add EIN or tax information.

Step 2: Verify your business details

  1. Go to Settings → Payments → Shopify Payments → Account details.

  2. Make sure all business information is accurate:

    • Legal business name

    • Business address

    • Tax ID / EIN

Even small differences between Shopify and IRS records can trigger the “contact administrator” error.

Step 3: Clear browser or try another device

  • Log out and log back in.

  • Try a different browser or private/incognito mode.

  • Sometimes cached data prevents Shopify from recognizing admin status.

Step 4: Contact Shopify Support if needed

If you’ve verified your role and business details and it still blocks you:

  • Go to Shopify Help Center → Contact Support

  • Explain: “I am the store owner, trying to add my EIN, but it says to contact the administrator.”

  • Include screenshots — this speeds up verification.

:light_bulb: Tip: Shopify Payments is very strict about EIN and legal business info. Ensuring all your account details exactly match official records usually resolves this without a prolonged wait.
