Incoming stock vs committed stock vs available stock

I have to ask why Shopify are making changes to the dashboard that are worse than before.

Recently we noticed they removed the seacrh bar from the top of the orders, inventory pages etc. This doesnt help mke our jobs any easier.

Now they are removing important columns from the inventory check page.

Why has the column ‘incoming’ been removed and a tab created instead? We needed a page that shows the: incoming stock /vs/ committed stock /vs/ available stock. Why change this??

I look forward to your justification.

Completely agree with this. They have also just added ‘on hand’ for your inventory. This is crazy. Why would I need to see products at a snapshot that are already sold? Makes for a very long and hard stock take!

I also chatted with Shopify support for about 30 mins yesterday explaining how the “on hand” amount isn’t what retailers need to see. We need to be able to quickly look at the ACTUAL available inventory amounts from the bulk edit products screen & individual product pages. I was told they would give my feedback to the developers, but there was nothing they could do to help me out. So frustrating.

They also messed up the bulk inventory import process with the new added columns. They made available a calculated field which can’t be updated via the bulk import. Their available calculation takes on hand and subtracts committed. This causes a problem when importing drop ship inventory from a supplier who already knows about your committed order and factors that into their available quantity feed. E.g., 2 drop ship pieces available from a dropship supplier. An order is placed for 1 piece. The order is submitted to the dropshipper. Shopify shows 2 on hand, 1 committed, 1 available. Drop shipper sends inventory qty update showing 1 available. I import it via bulk import in the on hand field (which is now the only field I can use to import inventory as the others are ignored in the import). Shopify updates my inventory to 1 on hand, 1 available, 1 committed. The drop shipper ships the order and I add the tracking number in shopify. Shopify now shows 0 committed 0 on hand, 0 available when in fact i have 1 piece available. Ridiculous! at least let me modify the committed field via bulk import to get around the issue.

Agree with you about the loss of the search bar. I guess if you have fewer than 10 items in your store this is a non-issue.

The change is inventory is more problematic. Committed stock is now counted as On Hand. Items that are sold and in orders that are waiting to be picked up are listed as committed (and now included in the On Hand). So items that are sold no longer ours are being counted in the On Hand!

I also spent time with Shopify Support yesterday voicing serious concerns about these exact same things! The search bar has more clicks now and isn’t as functional when using web browser on mobile (which I often do when I’m at our warehouse or on the sales floor at the shops). And this whole on-hand fiasco alongside the shift of the “incoming” inventory to a separate tab?! Honestly, how do these things get approved without any consultation of end-users? This is just the latest in a long line of examples of Shopify making changes that fail to consult, warn, or even take into consideration the experience and needs of us as end-users. I am having nightmares thinking about how I’ll bulk upload inventory cycle counts, since it appears we can only modify the on-hand inventory not available…

Agreed! Moving the incoming column is infuriating! And even if you get the incoming tab set up with the product type filter, if you add a transfer and then go back, it takes you to the Inventory Page, not the incoming tab you filtered. It wastes countless hours on our part!
