In your experience, how much genuine innovation (i.e. brand new, never done before) ideas do you see as a percentage of client projects? When I am creating a new design, often I am “assembling” (like a magpie) ideas from things Ive seen and then putting them together into what I think is a good total concept. But I am never sure how much genuine new innovation our competitors (and any other business) are given consumers. To put it another way, how much genuine “blue sky” nnovation do consumers expect or experience when it comes to product packaging?

Cool question, Kenn! I would frame this as innovative packaging being less important vs. innovative ways you can REACH your target audience. How are you able to take your packaging and use that as a vehicle to communicate your branding to your unique audience successfully. That’s where the true innovation can come through.
