What feedback do you want?

Specific pain point — The updated process for accounting for damaged items or theft is complicated. You can no longer enter a negative amount to quickly adjust inventory. Any suggestions?

Hi @MrPickles1 I hear you — the workflow got more steps after Shopify moved to the “Unavailable states” model. Here’s the current fastest way to do it:

  1. Go to Products → Inventory
  2. Click the quantity in the Available column for the affected product
  3. Click the Set to dropdown → select Adjust by
  4. Enter the quantity to remove
  5. Select your location as origin
  6. Select Inventory removal as the destination
  7. Optional: click Add reason and choose Damaged, Theft, or another reason — this keeps your adjustment history accurate for reporting
  8. Click Save

The reason you can’t enter a simple negative number anymore is that Shopify now tracks why inventory left (damaged vs theft vs quality control vs safety stock), which is genuinely useful for reporting — but yes, it does add clicks compared to the old flow.

Tip: If you’re doing this often, use Bulk edit on the Products page and filter by SKU first, so you’re not navigating to each product individually. Also worth checking Analytics → Reports → Inventory adjustment changes to review theft/damage patterns over time once you’ve logged a few.

No way to skip the “origin/destination” step currently — but tagging the reason each time does pay off later when you’re trying to spot recurring shrinkage patterns. And also if this will work then don’t forget to like and mark as solution on it
