Is it easy to switch themes if new features are incompatible with the Brooklyn Theme?

I have a new store and it is built on the Brooklyn Theme. From what I have learned, this is not compatible with 2.0/new Shopify features. I am not sure if I should be concerned about this. What will I be missing out on? The bigger question is it easy to move sites from one theme to another if one presents better options?

Feeling a bit overwhelmed at the moment and not sure if this is an issue or not.

One thing I would like to do is capture email addresses when someone visits the site and that does not seem possible at present.

Thanks in advance.

Lisa

Hi, Lisa!

You’re right—Brooklyn is a vintage theme, and doesn’t support Shopify’s latest features. You can compare the differences between Brooklyn and newer themes here: Online Store 2.0 features vs. vintage theme features. While the Online Store 2.0 themes offer more flexibility in customization, rest assured that customer experience won’t be lacking if you’re using a vintage theme.

You can absolutely still collect email addresses, both on your home page and at checkout. On the home page, you’ll be using Brooklyn’s Newsletter section to collect email addresses. The settings should look something like this in your theme editor (under Online Store > Themes > Customize

If you want to test out one of the newer themes, you can do so in the background without disturbing the current theme. You’re able to add up to 20 themes to your admin, so if you find one you prefer, you can customize it and then publish it when it’s ready. Considerations for switching themes can be found here. I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks so much for the reply Sophia. This is super helpful. I am collecting it that way so that is the good news. And I will take a look at the themes and see if a switch in the future would make sense.

Cheers,

Revisiting the email capture question. I do have that option on my homepage but it’s entirely optional so I am missing out on being able to capture the traffic. Out of 650 visits, I’ve had 5 ish people sign up. If it was a pop up, it would most likely force you to leave your email. Is there a 3rd party solution that could solve for this?

Thanks,

Lisa

Yes, there are email capture apps that can add a pop up to your store. It’s definitely worth testing to see if you have more customers signing up! You can offer a simple email signup, or incentive to sign up like personalized product recommendations, a giveaway entry, or a discount.

Hi, Sophia!

Jumping on this thread, since your reply was so helpful! We’re also using the Brooklyn theme, and are experiencing an issue where the slideshow either doesn’t advance, or goes two slides and then stops. Any suggestions?

Hi, @goodgoesaround !

That’s interesting. While Brooklyn is an older theme, the slideshow should still be working as this is a pretty standard feature across themes and isn’t specific to Online Store 2.0.

Were any apps installed recently that interact with the theme? Or has the theme code been edited?
