Merchants need to bulk import gift cards (often from third-party systems) into Shopify, similar to how bulk discount codes work. The desired CSV would include card codes, customer details, values, and other data points.
Technical Limitation:
Shopify’s Gift Card API is only available to Shopify Plus subscribers, preventing standard plan users from accessing bulk import functionality natively or through most apps.
Available Workarounds:
- Discount codes instead of gift cards: Create customer lists via tags and issue discount codes (doesn’t maintain balance like true gift cards)
- Paid apps: Rise.ai (works on all plans but expensive), Givy (newer, less expensive alternative with custom codes and email features)
- Private apps: Webinopoly offers custom development for Plus stores specifically
- Free tool: Excel-based solution available on GitHub (https://github.com/stevenhoney/excel-shopify-gift-card-tool)
Current Status:
No native Shopify solution exists despite ongoing feature requests since 2015. One community member attempted developing a free solution in 2020 but ran out of funding. The discussion remains active with merchants seeking alternatives, though the Plus-only API restriction remains the primary barrier.

Hello guys,
are any of you using the ERP plentymarkets and have found a solution to activate gift card codes that were automatically created for gift cards in plenty markets in Shopify? We are currently struggling to find a solution, so that we don’t have to manually activate every gift card code that was used.

For anybody still looking for an answer to this, we have an app that makes this very easy. (yes, shameless self-promotion).
It is a paid app, but much less expensive than Rise, with stronger features.
- Choose specific gift card codes (or let the app generate them)
- Optionally send each gift card to email recipients (with custom emails, or integrations with Klaviyo and Omnisend)
- Sell custom gift card amounts on the storefront (without needing draft orders)
- Custom URLs to send recipients to after claiming their gift card code
The app also enables product and subscription gifting, and bulk product gifting in the admin.
