I have been trying to start a 14 day trial for the past week and have not been able to because it says that my store name is taken. I have paid for the domain on “GoDaddy” so I have no idea why Shopify will says it is taken.

Was the message about the store name or the domain name? Those are different things.
If it was the store name (for example my-awesome-shopify.myshopify.com) then you will need to pick something different. This doesn’t stop you from adding your domain name it’s just that someone grabbed the myshopify url. There will always be business with similar names so there’s a chance that will happen. Once you’re domain is added customers won’t really see the myshopify url.
Now if it’s saying the domain name is already in use reach out to the support team. If you own the domain (and can prove it of course) they’ll be able to help add it to you current shop

Did you ever get a solution? I am having this same problem. It says the store name is taken, but when I search for it using the shopify url extension, it doesn’t show up. I own a domain that I’d like to set shopify up on. How can I do this if the only way (or is it?) to set up my account is to add a store name? I don’t see an option where I can set up an account where I already have a store name, in the form of a URL.
