This topic was discussed here before the store credit feature was available:
Now that it’s available, Shopify should support the option to refund to a different payment method than the original one, such as store credit.
A lot of stores offer this option to clients during refunds (giving a gift card or store credit as a refund), but it has to be done manually in separate operations (order refund items on 0 amount, then a gift card is by the merchant).
This complicates things in accounting matters, as the gift card is not connected to that order refund in Shopify, which makes it impossible for companies to track the transaction flow.
Supporting store credit (or even gift cards) as a different payment method in a refund should be Shopify interest**.** Not supporting it is currently Shopify’s policy, which is a big mistake and should be changed.
