Is Shopify Payment expanding to Bulgaria in 2023 or 2024?

Topic summary

Bulgarian merchants have been requesting Shopify Payments expansion to Bulgaria for several years, citing significant business limitations. Without it, they cannot display local currencies at checkout, offer Google Pay, or provide competitive pricing in multiple currencies—resulting in reduced sales and higher cart abandonment rates for international customers.

Key Pain Points:

  • Third-party payment gateways charge high fees and lack essential features
  • Checkout currency restrictions cause approximately 20% sales loss in international markets
  • Merchants pay the same Shopify fees as those in supported countries but lack access to core features
  • EU member status makes the exclusion particularly frustrating, especially since neighboring Romania gained support

Shopify’s Response:
Staff repeatedly stated they cannot provide timelines for expansion, recommending Stripe as an alternative. However, Stripe doesn’t resolve the multi-currency checkout limitation.

Resolution:
Shopify Payments finally launched in Bulgaria (confirmed by multiple users in recent posts). Merchants successfully activated the service and can now enable local currency pricing at checkout. Some users also mentioned third-party solutions like Easy Pie Shopify and Shopify Stripe Checkout as workarounds for multi-currency support via Stripe.

Hello,
Is Shopify Payment being considered to expand in Bulgaria in 2023 or 2024? It’s a shame that in 2023 we still can’t sell to international customers.

Hi there, @Mexess .

We are always looking to expand and improve our offerings, but currently I cannot give a timeline for when or even if Shopify Payments will be available for our merchants in Bulgaria. I will be happy to submit this as a future platform update request on your behalf.

Just so you know - here is a list of all the supported gateways we have for Bulgaria currently. Thank you!

3 years, always same answer!

Yep same issue, we can’t have different pricing in Euro and USD without some very convoluted way.

The problem is that without Shopify payments we can’t have Google Pay nor we can display local currencies at checkout. Which is resulting in less sales and more abandoned checkouts for our international customers.

Hi, Ivy, any update on introducing Shopify Payments in Bulgaria? It is a shame that an EU member country doesn’t have this option. Romania is now featured but Bulgaria, when?

All of us here in Bulgaria are struggling with the high fees of the 3rd party payment providers. Most of them are not even a good fit! It’s a shame we don’t have Shopify payments. I know it’s way more complicated than just adding Bulgaria to the list with 1 click but everyone is going to benefit from this! Shopify will keep all the fees and merchants will be happy too! We can’t wait to have Shopify payments! Fingers crossed soon :crossed_fingers:

Hi, Ivy! It’s in a high demand to have Shopify payments in Bulgaria. There are millions of merchants here in Bulgaria who would benefit from it. And it is a shame that as an EU country we cannot use it. I hope we can soon, fingers crossed.

Wish you a wonderful day!

Hi everyone! I wanted to assure you that your feedback here is still being heard and provided to our developers for continued consideration. I do not have an updates at this time on when/if Shopify Payments will expand to Bulgaria. A positive note though, is that we do support Stripe in Bulgaria and Stripe is one of the gateways that powers Shopify Payments! I definitely recommend checking out Stripe as a gateway solution at this time.

You can also see all supported payment gateways based on country on our Payment Gateway’s page.

Dear Shay,

Thank you for the recommendation, we’re already using Stripe. However the major problem is the currencies at Checkout. For example, I am loosing about 20% of sales in other markets just because at checkout I can’t display the prices at the customers’ local currency. It is definitely not fair to restrict this feature to Shopify payments only, once the service is not covering all regions. After all, we do pay the same monthly fees as the Germans, or the Brits, but we don’t have access to the same features. I would propose that for merchants who are in regions out of Shopify payments, you should consider providing another option for us to display the prices at checkout in local currency of the customer.

I came to look for a solution, I go knowing they don’t have a solution …

There is so many serious entrepreneurs that struggle with Stripe ans others in Bulgaria, even the big ones. It’s a city full of foreigns entreprenors that had it in their home country but that lost it when they arrived here. We need it again.

Hello Shay,

It is really strange why Shopify hasn’t wanted to do this for so many years. It’s a pity, as I am about to open a new online store and would have been a Shopify customer if…

And there are plenty of entrepreneurs around me who, for the same reason, will not choose Shopify. These are the facts.

Hey, Shay! Are there any updates on the expansion of Shopify Payments in Bulgaria?

Hey, @Dimitar7 ! We are unable to share any updates regarding this, however, you’re welcome to keep an eye on our changelog or this help doc to be informed about any changes to the supported countries for Shopify Payments.

If you have a Stripe account, with Easy|Pie Shopify, you can accept most payment methods via Stripe.

It also supports multi currency. So, for example, it allows you to accept payments in EUR while your default currency is BGN, using fixed exchange rates for new markets (countries) that you will add from the Markets settings.

Hey there, +1 for this.
Is there maybe a feature request about this that the community could upvote to help you better understand the level of priority of the matter and the potential volume impact for your users ?

Unfortunately any third-party checkouts are forbidden. Using them you put your store at risk of deactivation
