I've been scammed by a shoplifty store, what can I do now?

Topic summary

A customer purchased a gift in November from Motivinci (motivinvi.com) but never received the item despite receiving order confirmation. Multiple emails in December went unanswered, and a report through the Shopify app yielded no results.

Recent developments:

  • A follow-up email bounced back
  • The original order link no longer exists
  • The store now shows no products in the Shopify app
  • The business appears to have relocated to a UK domain (Motivinci.co)

Recommended actions:

  • Report the merchant to Shopify using their official fraud reporting tool
  • Contact the bank to attempt a transaction reversal (though timing may be challenging)
  • Note: The domain is 3.5 years old with inactive social media, suggesting possible abandonment rather than a purpose-built scam site

Status: At least one other user reports being scammed by the same store. The issue remains unresolved with no clear path to recovery.

I purchased a gift from a Shopify store for my husband in November. I received confirmation of the order and a purchase receipt, but I never received the item. The store name is Motivinci (motivinvi.com)

I emailed them several times in December to inquire about my package, but I never received a response. I also reported it through the Shopify app, but nothing came of that either. Since that time of year is always hectic, I decided to get something else for him and moved on.

As a last-ditch effort, I emailed them again yesterday, but the email bounced back, and when I clicked the link for my order, it no longer existed. I checked the order on my Shopify app, and when I clicked on it, it said the store had no products. I looked them up on Google and discovered that they have changed their website to a UK store, Motivinci.co, which is also a Shopify site.

I’ve used many Shopify stores to purchase items and was so disappointed that I was scammed. How can I have this matter investigated and my money recovered?

Thanks, Lydia

Hi @Lydia2

Sorry to hear about your bad experience. There are a lot of fake/scam Shopify stores and some of them do look legit.

But not sure of store link you posted https://motivinci.com/ does work and that is a store domain that is 3 and half years old. But if you check Facebook seems they did not post for quite some time. So they’re not a new domain made explicit for a scam but still. They do have that info email but also a support one in footer but I doubt there will be a reply.

If you have not already reported them on

https://www.shopify.com/legal/tools/report-an-issue/report-a-merchant

under Issue with order or Fraud. That way Shopify could investigate and hopefully close a store.

And contact your bank, some time has passed so it’s probably a long shot, but do try to get a transaction stopped.

Good luck

They scammed me too!
