Shopify now offers Klarna integration directly through Shopify Payments, prompting existing Klarna users to consider switching from the standalone third-party payment method.
Key advantages of the Shopify Payments integration:
Lower transaction fees: 4.99% + 30p versus 5.25% + 30p
Eliminates the additional 1% Shopify fee for third-party payment methods
Simplified accounting through consolidated Shopify payouts
Enables international customers to use Klarna in their local currencies
Setup clarification:
Merchants do not need a separate Klarna merchant account if using Shopify Payments or Stripe. The feature can be enabled directly through Shopify’s payment settings with a simple toggle. Several users confirmed successful activation without prior Klarna merchant accounts.
Current limitation:
One merchant reports that international customers from Klarna-supported countries (e.g., Sweden) cannot see the Klarna option at checkout when the store only accepts GBP. This remains an unresolved issue, with the merchant considering whether to re-add Klarna as a third-party method despite higher fees.
Additional notes:
Some users suggest third-party solutions like Stripe-based checkout apps, and Klarna badges can be added to product pages through theme customization or apps like Conversion Bear Trust Badges.

I just got an email from Shopify saying that Klarna is now available through Shopify Payments.
I’ve already been using Klarna for a while but it’s as an “additional payment method” under settings > payments, rather than through Shopify Payments.
Is there any benefit of changing my setup to get it through Shopify Payments instead? Will the Klarna option show up in the same way on the checkout page, are the fees the same, etc? The help docs say nothing about existing users.
Guys sorry to jump onto post I have never opened a Klarna Merchant Account, direct with Klarna. The below was on my shopify home page. Ive enabled this and it does figure at the check out page
question is - do i still need to open and get approved for a Klarna Shopify account ?
But as far as I can tell if it offered it to you on the dashboard and you can enable it then you are already good to go and it’s comes through as part of your Shopify payout, everything is handled by Shopify.
If it’s showing it at the checkout page you are good to go.
Just what I was looking for. I have just had an argument with Klarna after two weeks of trying to set up a Klarna Merchant Account only to be asked do you have Shopify? To confirm… you do not need a Merchant account! Just click the little Klarna button on Shopify under your ‘payments method’ section and it’s added onto your Shopify payment gateway… just like that. To advertise you’re offering Klarna I use the free app: Conversion Bear Trust Badges and have added this along with my other payment options.
If you have a Stripe account that supports Klarna, you do not need to have Klarna merchant account. And try the third party solution easy Shopify Stripe Checkout.
Running into a problem where international customers don’t get the Klarna option at checkout. Mine is a UK shop and only accepts GBP£. UK customers see the Klarna option, but international customers don’t, even if they’re in one of the Klarna accepted countries eg Sweden.
I’ve considered adding back Klarna as a third party payment method like how it used to work but the fees are higher, and I might have to remove the Shopify built-in version of Klarna since the two might conflict?
