Limit for Manual Product/Variant Creation

Topic summary

A user is seeking clarification on Shopify’s variant creation limits for stores with 50,000+ existing variants.

Known Limitation:

  • Shopify documentation clearly states that stores with 50,000+ variants can only import up to 1,000 new variants per day via app or CSV file.

Unanswered Question:

  • Whether the same 1,000-variant daily limit applies to manual variant creation through the Shopify admin interface.
  • The user notes this distinction is not explicitly addressed in the official documentation.

The discussion remains open with no responses yet, seeking confirmation on whether manual creation bypasses the import rate limit or follows the same restriction.

Hello,

So the Shopify documentation is clear that we can only import through an app/csv 1000 new variants each day if we have already in our store 50,000 variants. Below is a link and the quote. What is not clear is if there is a limit on how many new variants we can manually create in our stores, if we already have 50,000 variants. Does anyone know the answer to this? It is strange that this is not made more obvious in the documentation as it clearly points out the limits for “uploads/import”.

“If you have 50,000 or more variants in your store, then you’re subject to a daily rate limit for uploading variants by using an app or CSV file import. You can add up to 1,000 new variants in a day before the limit is reached”
