Line 2-5: Validation failed: The variant 'Default Title' already exists

Topic summary

Users are encountering a “Validation failed: The variant ‘Default Title’ already exists” error during product migration to Shopify, despite believing their Excel files are correctly formatted.

Initial Problem:

  • Error persists even after removing extra data lines and cleaning the spreadsheet
  • An error image was shared but appears corrupted in the thread

Suggested Solution:

  • Navigate to the problematic product in Shopify admin
  • Check the Variants section for duplicate ‘Default Title’ entries
  • Rename or delete any variant titled ‘Default Title’ to ensure uniqueness
  • Verify each variant has a distinct title before saving

Ongoing Issue:

  • One user reports the standard solution doesn’t resolve their case
  • Confusion exists around variant naming: their variants use option names (like “COLOR - PINK”) rather than traditional variant titles
  • The distinction between variant “TITLE” and option names may be causing the validation error

Status: Unresolved - requires clarification on how Shopify handles variants with option names versus default titles.

keep getting this error. Every which way I look my excel file seems to be correct. I even removed any extra lines of data to not confuse shopify. what is wrong?

The error message “Validation Failed: The Variant ‘Default Title’ Already Exists” typically occurs when you’re trying to create a variant with the title ‘Default Title’ that already exists for another variant within the same product. Each variant within a product must have a unique title.

To resolve this issue, you can follow these steps:

  1. Open your Shopify admin dashboard and navigate to the product that is causing the error.
  2. Go to the product’s “Variants” section.
  3. Look for a variant with the title ‘Default Title’ and either rename it to something unique or delete it if it’s not necessary.
  4. Save the changes.
  5. Try creating the new variant again, making sure to provide a unique title for each variant.

By ensuring that each variant has a unique title, you should be able to create the variant without encountering the “Validation Failed” error.

Need to jump in this thread becasuse I constantly keep getting this error and the explanation provided doent seem to work.

Variants dont have “TITLE” variants have option names suchs as “COLOR - PINK” so what do you mean with “Default Title”?
