Just a quick clarification – I think there was a small misunderstanding. I’m not migrating a store for a client, I actually design and build e-commerce templates myself. The links I shared earlier are theme examples, not live stores that need migrating.
My goal is to rebuild these templates and adapt them to Shopify’s structure and Liquid language.
That said, I have a concern:
If I create a development store through the Shopify Partner program, will my theme files be stored on Shopify’s servers only?
Is there no way to work on the theme locally (like a local dev environment or private server) during development – just for building purposes, not for selling or going live?
I’m a bit hesitant to upload my work-in-progress directly to external servers without more control or backup options.
It is recommended to apply for a development Shopify store under your current situation. And after applying, you should test all features in Shopify intially like page preview and related functions. Hi, Yes, the project slowed down a bit. The store is actually mostly migrated to Shopify from the technical side. The main thing that stopped me was performance and optimization. On PrestaShop I’m able to reach very strong results, even close to 100/100, and so far I haven’t been able to achieve the same level on Shopify. I’m also still not sure whether my clients will be interested in SaaS-based stores. I’m testing the market, but most people who currently move away from PrestaShop seem to be looking for open-source solutions rather than SaaS. On top of that, I had to pause the project because of other client work and lack of time.To be honest, I’m still not sure what the future of this project will be. I’m looking for some motivation and a clear reason to continue with Shopify.

For a test development store, you need to create a Shopify partner account. You need to visist here at: https://partner.shopify.com/
Sign up to the partner account and then you have create a development store. After that you need to test it from any perspective. But in a development store customers must not be able to checkout the products.
Regarding your second Question, it’s not highly recommended to rebuild the site same as currently on PrestaShop. This is because Shopify already has premium themes to try with.

Thanks for the clarification. This is exactly why I prefer to handle the migration as a custom development project rather than use a ready-made migration service or integration. My main priorities are clean, individually written code, full control over the theme architecture, strong SEO foundations and maximum frontend performance. In my experience, it is difficult to achieve the same level of optimization when relying on automated converters, generic integrations or pre-built solutions. I am therefore not looking for a company to migrate the store for me. I am mainly looking for practical advice from developers who have manually rebuilt complex PrestaShop themes in Shopify Liquid and can share the technical challenges they encountered.
