No Auto-Update for New themes?

Topic summary

Users report that Shopify’s newer themes, specifically Tinker, lack automatic update notifications despite newer versions being available (v2.0.0 mentioned). The standard theme update mechanism appears unavailable for these themes.

Key concerns:

  • No visible update prompts in the admin interface
  • Manual migration of customizations appears necessary
  • One user notes updates may not appear when themes have code modifications

User impact:
A merchant working extensively on Tinker v1.0.5 expresses frustration about needing to rebuild their entire site layout from scratch to adopt v2.0, describing the manual update process as problematic.

Status: The discussion remains open with one moderator asking for clarification about whether the theme was properly imported into Shopify, suggesting potential troubleshooting steps.

I’m currently using one of Shopify’s newly released themes — Tinker.

I noticed that the latest version is v2.0.0, but there’s no update notification, and it seems we can’t upgrade it through the usual method.

Are we supposed to migrate the changes manually?

@JohnnyChen , hey, thanks for posting here.
Have you imported this theme into Shopify?

It isn’t always present, especially if a theme has code modifications.

I agree this is a horrible way to do the update. I have been working on a tinker 1.0.5 for a while working on a total rebuild of my entire site, and now with Tinker 2.0 I have to go though and recreate my entire site/layout again fresh?

Pretty terrible.
