Almost been a year and I keep looking for a solution that does not exist. Attempted to create a new ticket to get an update but it never got responded to and since the forum system doesn’t bump up responses I felt another year, another post was probably due to highlight this.
Shopify needs more granular taxation.
Original post: https://community.shopify.com/c/accounting-and-taxes/how-to-set-this-up-tax-collection-for-state-county-amp-city/td-p/1372900 (includes supports original non-answer)
- If you own a grocery store, you have many taxes that are applicable to different products (prepared foods, baked goods, candy, sugar taxes, etc.)
- If you own a bar, you have many different taxes that applicable to products.
- If you own a chocolate shop (me! me!) and you have different tax rates in the county for products you make or resale, this kind of idea is not handled and its not able to be handled through overrides.
I have been split between two different POS systems now for over a year. Square handles this taxation issue like a champ but it’s online shopping experience is trash still. However every year they bite a bit more into the development of it making it better. If Square beats out Shopify’s ability to handle taxes and their website services matures far enough–I’ll float that way but I’d really like to move fully into Shopify and not Square.
So PLEASE, create a better taxation system that allows more options on a product base &/or overrides on every level of tax collection.
Recap:
- Our State has a base rate (4.75%).
- Our County has base rate (2.5%).
- Our City (County) has a Food rate for goods that are made by us (eg: Prepared foods. 1%)
- We sell both in house made goods and resold goods.
Shopify captures the state & general county rate just fine but it has no knowledge of the prepared food rate (+1%) that needs to be added. And it only needs to be added to purchases in the county, not outside of it.
