Hi All,
We are looking for a solution that allows us to manage automated instalment payments on draft orders.
Here’s the ideal workflow we’re trying to achieve:
1, Our sales team creates a draft order for a customer. They collect an initial deposit on the spot
2, We then need a way—within Shopify or via an integrated app—to schedule the remaining balance to be automatically charged on future dates (e.g., split into fixed instalments). Ideally it would be 2x fortnightly instalments.
3, Most importantly, we want the system to automate these future payments, so we don’t have to manually follow up or chase customers. The payments should come out of their account/card automatically based on the schedule we set. It would be good if customers can even get notified when a payment is due.
Do you have any app suggestions for the above, or any way we can manage the above workflow.
Kind Regards, Sharnae
Shopify Draft Orders by default don’t have built-in automatic instalment payment scheduling — Shopify is great for regular checkout flows, subscriptions, and post-purchase upsells, but draft order + automatic future payments is a tricky combo.
So, what you’re asking for is:
- Initial deposit manually paid
- Remaining balance auto-charged on fixed dates
- No chasing customers — charges happen automatically
- Notifications go out for each payment
Reality Check
Unfortunately, Shopify’s native draft orders + invoices don’t support auto-billing the remaining balance on a schedule out of the box.
You’ll need either:
- A Subscription App that can handle “split payments” — but most only work on products through the online checkout, not draft orders.
- A Payment Link / Payment Plan App that can break payments into instalments.
What you can do instead (Practical Solutions)
Recommended Apps:
A. Partial.ly Payment Plans
-
Does exactly what you want — you can send a link to pay the deposit, then it automatically charges the remaining balance on the schedule you set (weekly, fortnightly, etc.).
-
Fully automated, with reminders and card storage.
-
Works with draft order workflows (via custom links).
-
Partial.ly on Shopify App Store
B. Chargezen (formerly known as PayWhirl)
-
Handles subscriptions AND payment plans.
-
Can create custom payment plan widgets.
-
Supports auto-charging cards & sending reminders.
-
Chargezen on Shopify App Store
- Split — Partial Payments
How it Usually Works- You don’t technically use a draft order for the full amount.
-
Instead, you use the app to generate a custom payment link for the deposit.
-
The customer pays it → card details are stored securely.
-
The app auto-charges the remaining balance later as per your schedule.
-
The customer gets reminders before every charge.
Important:- Pick an app that can save payment details. Not all partial payment apps do this.
-
You’ll need to test the flow once, so your sales team knows exactly how to create the first link.
-
Inform your customers upfront about automatic charges (for legal and trust reasons).
Let me know if you have any issues!
Hello @sharnae
Split Payment & Deposit app can handle exactly what you’re looking for! SPD Split Payment & Deposit - Shopify Deposit Payment & Split Pay App: Best Choice 2025 | Shopify App Store
For your workflow:
You can set up deposit payments where customers pay an initial percentage upfront, then we automatically charge the remaining balance on scheduled dates. For fortnightly installments, you’d configure the payment frequency to every 2 weeks in the installment settings.
Automated processing: When customers make the initial payment, we automatically create draft orders for the remaining installments and send invoices according to your payment schedule - no manual follow-up needed!
Customer notifications: We handle all customer communications through customizable email templates that notify customers about payment schedules, approaching deadlines, and order confirmations.
You can set this up by going to Deferred payments in your dashboard, selecting either deposit or installment payments, and configuring your initial payment percentage and payment frequency.
