Product Bundles + Upsells

We want to offer “Houseplant Care Kits” that bundle related products (e.g., fertilizer, soil, and tools for a specific plant type).

How can we optimize these bundles for both SEO and conversions?

Should we create separate product pages for each kit, or use Shopify’s built-in features?

If the kits are meaningfully different in a way that people search for, then they should be separate product pages. Otherwise I’d just make them variants of the same product.

Basically, your page creation strategy should align with how your customers search. If they search for [red kits] and [blue kits] and you sell both of those kids, then you’d probably want to have separate product pages for “red” and “blue” (just as a hypothetical example).

Hi @MollyHRC

Creating “Houseplant Care Kits” can be a strong way to increase basket size if they’re marketed correctly. You’ll want to think about both search visibility (so customers can find your kits) and user experience (so shoppers actually buy them).

1. Decide how customers search and shop

  • SEO perspective – Many shoppers search for specific kits: “succulent care kit,” “monstera fertilizer and soil kit,” etc. Separate product pages let you optimise each kit’s title, meta description and product copy around those plant‑specific keywords. This improves your chances of ranking for long‑tail searches and avoids keyword cannibalisation (e.g. a generic “houseplant care kit” page competing with itself). Make sure each page has unique content, high‑quality photos and internal links to related products (e.g. your fertilizer or tools individually).

  • Conversion perspective – Bundles work best when they feel tailored. Calling a kit “Snake Plant Care Kit” and showing a photo of the actual plant along with soil, fertilizer and pruning shears will convert better than a generic “houseplant kit.” Adding a short explainer (“everything you need to keep your snake plant thriving”) and emphasising the savings or convenience helps justify the bundle price. If you have many plant types, you can create a single “Care Kit” product and use variants or bundle options for each plant type, which keeps your store manageable.

2. Use Shopify and apps strategically

  • Separate product pages – Ideal if you have a handful of high‑value kits that target distinct keywords. Each page can be optimised for SEO and have unique imagery, plus you can run ads to a specific kit. The downside is inventory management: you need to track each bundle SKU or use an app to sync the component stock.

  • Shopify’s built‑in variants – Good for many plant types that share the same core items. You can create one “Houseplant Care Kit” product and add variants (Succulent, Orchid, Monstera). Use metafields to customise the description and images per variant. This keeps stock centralised while still serving different plants.

  • Bundling/upsell apps – Apps like BiSell Upsell & Cross Sell let you create “Frequently Bought Together” bundles and cross‑sell add‑ons without separate product pages. You can set up a main product (e.g., Snake Plant) and configure an automatic “Kit” bundle that shows fertilizer, soil, and tools beneath it. BiSell also supports discount functions, so you can offer a percentage off when shoppers add all three items. For SEO, your product pages still rank, but the bundle appears dynamically on the page to encourage a larger cart.

  • Inventory & discount management – Use Shopify’s “Buy X get Y” discounts or a bundle app that splits the sale into individual SKUs. This keeps inventory accurate and lets you track which kit components are selling.

3. Enhance pages for both search and conversions

  • Use descriptive, keyword‑rich titles like “Philodendron Care Kit – Soil, Fertilizer & Pruning Tools.”

  • Write unique descriptions that explain why those components are included and how to use them.

  • Add lifestyle images or short videos showing the kit in use. Alt text on images can also include keywords.

  • Highlight savings (“Save 15 % when you buy the bundle”) or convenience (“Everything you need in one kit”) to improve conversion rate.

  • Collect reviews on your kits; user‑generated content and Q&A sections add keyword‑rich text and social proof.

Recommendation: If you only plan to sell a few distinct kits, creating separate pages per kit will give you the most SEO control. If you have many kits or prefer a single page, use Shopify variants and a bundle/upsell app like BiSell to dynamically suggest and discount the accessory items. Whichever approach you choose, make sure each kit’s copy and visuals feel tailored to that plant type to maximise conversions.
