We have a very large Shopify store, 2000 collections, 50k product variants. Some of our collections are quite large being the parent collection to the breadcrumbs that have many products so when a visitor chooses the parent collection they are unable to filter the products in that collection due to it containing 1000+ we don’t have the option of creating more collections either as our breadcrumbs connection for collections have hit the Shopify hardcoded API limit of 256kb we were told we could have 5000 smart collections before signing up for Shopify but it seems you may only be able to have less than half that amount especially if they get complicated when branching out for menu navigation, we used a great app that helped but even the app is limited by Shopify API limit… The app was called uncomplicated collections and can be found in the app store on Shopify
Topic summary
Main issue: On a large Shopify store (about 2,000 collections and 50k product variants), product filters are disabled on collections with over 1,000 products, breaking filtering on high-level parent collections used in breadcrumbs (navigational hierarchy).
Constraints cited:
- Cannot split into more collections due to a Shopify hardcoded API payload limit of 256 KB tied to their breadcrumbs/menu setup.
- Expected support for up to 5,000 smart collections (automated rule-based groupings), but in practice the limit is lower when collections become complex for navigation.
- A third-party app (Uncomplicated Collections) helped but is also constrained by the same Shopify API limit.
Request: Recommendations for apps or other solutions that enable filtering on very large collections (>1,000 products).
Outcome/status: No solutions or workarounds provided yet; the question remains open with key uncertainty around how to implement filters under current Shopify limits.
Is there any apps anyone knows where we can have filters on very large collections? Or if you might know any solution we can use it would be greatly appreciated
