Regarding Stripe Payment not available for USA

Topic summary

Core Issue:
Stripe payment gateway is unavailable for US-based Shopify stores because Shopify Payments is the default option in regions where it’s supported. The two payment processors cannot be used simultaneously.

Key Points:

  • Initial troubleshooting: Users confirmed Shopify Payments was fully deactivated, but Stripe still didn’t appear as an option for US stores
  • Root cause: Stripe is intentionally blocked in countries where Shopify Payments is available (including the USA)
  • Verification: When users changed store location to countries without Shopify Payments (like Russia), Stripe became available

User Concerns:

  • Merchants want to consolidate existing Stripe accounts with Shopify sales
  • Some businesses sell restricted products (adult items) that Shopify Payments doesn’t support
  • International merchants without US Social Security Numbers cannot use Shopify Payments

Status: Unresolved for US merchants. Support recommends exploring alternative payment gateways from Shopify’s approved list, though this doesn’t address the specific need for Stripe integration. One user suggests a third-party solution that works with existing Stripe accounts regardless of location.

Hello @DanyelleGray ,

My name is Ren from the Shopify support team, thanks for your post!

Is there a chance that you have Shopify Payments enabled? Or that you maybe began the process of enabling Shopify Payments but you haven’t completed all the activation steps? If so, this means that Stripe won’t show up as a payment gateway option as the two cannot be used in conjunction.

You’ll want to completely disable and deactivate Shopify Payments and then try again. I have outlined the steps below:

Head to Settings > Payment providers and you will see an option to “Manage” Shopify Payments:

At the very bottom of the next page, you will see an option to “Deactivate Shopify Payments”.

This will complete the process and you should be able to log out and back in to find Stripe as an available option. Please let me know if you run into any issues!

  • Thank you for your replay.

  • We have follow the step given by you. but we need not find any solution. then we select “united state” there is no option for “stripe”.

  • When we select other country like “Russian” option for stripe is available it is only not available in “us”.

  • Thank you.

Hi, we have tried that way but their are no option available for stripe and could you please help us ASAP.

Hi @DanyelleGray ,

Alright, I see what is happening now as I initially missed where you mentioned being in the USA. Stripe isn’t actually available to merchants in locations where Shopify Payments is an available option, see here.

Is there a particular reason you want to use Stripe VS Shopify Payments? What are some of the things you are needing out of a payment gateway?

You can learn more about the features and options at this link.

Hi Ren,

I’m having the same problem. The reason I want to use Stripe over Shopify Payments, is we already have a Stripe account where we process cc payments from another site. I’d like to have this all in one location. Please advise how to proceed.

Thanks.

Bob

Hello Bob,

Thanks for your message. Are you located in the US? As mentioned above, Stripe isn’t available to merchants in locations where Shopify Payments is. You can see all of the Payment Gateway options available for the US or any other place in the World at this link.

I completely understand your desire to use Stripe if you’re already on an active account, but Shopify Payments is going to be your best option. You can learn more about the features and benefits here.

It’s the simplest way to accept all major payment methods from customers and eliminates the hassle of lengthy third-party setup. You’ll be automatically set up to accept these payment methods as soon as you create your Shopify store.

Happy to answer any further questions!

Hello Ren7,

I have a similar problem with one of the merchants we are onboarding on shopify. The brand deals with Adult products (Condoms & Toys) and shopify payments restricts the sale of Toys as a category. For this we had approached Stripe payments and they are allowing us to use their payment gateway for the sale of sex toys.

Do let me know how to proceed in this case scenario.

Regards

Roy

Hey Ren,
What if you don’t have an SSN (required by Shopify Payments)?
This is why we need the Stripe payment option

Thanks

Hello @murray123456789 , @Roy741

This issue may be location dependent. Where are you located? According to Stripe, SSN is a requirement for a US based Stripe account - see here.

That being said, there are many payment gateway options available for your consideration. Check the US options out here.

Have you looked into any other options to see what might be better suited to your business needs? If I can assist in any other ways, let me know. I’m happy to help!

I know you cannot change the fact that Stripe is not available to US-based storefronts and we cannot up and move our stores to another country. If a storeowner was to set up Shopify Payments with the same information as their Stripe account, would they see payments in the Stripe account or does Shopify Payments set up a new instance of Stripe, which the store owner won’t have access to?

If you have a Stripe account that solution works regardless your store’s location-country, and supports many payment methods supported by your Stripe account >> https://lnkd.in/diJN5YcB
