Request: Allow For Basic Content Editing Workflows

Hi There, while we’re grateful for all the new content features in 2.0, the experience is clunky - for many reasons.

One major flaw in 2.0 is that all your content lives in the template, not the page. But templates are for elements common across multiple pages, not for page-specific content.

This fundamental mistake makes working with content in Shopify unnecessarily painful because after duplicating a page to edit it, you’re actually editing the content from the original page. That’s because the content doesn’t live on the page, it lives in the template - silly no?

I’m all for re-invention but there’s a reason why content is separate from templates.

For now, this seems to be the best workaround: https://community.shopify.com/post/2771674

But please, it’s time to re-think fundamentals from a more content-centric point of view.

I hope that makes sense. Cheers, Ben

Putting content directly into template settings is a choice.

Use dynamic sources, custom-liquid sections/blocks/settings, or customize the theme to consume admin-content in specific ways

https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-store/themes/theme-structure/sections-and-blocks#metafields-and-dynamic-sources

Beyond that themes are always going to be an introductory experience in comparison with services that specialize in pagebuilders as their actual business model.

For actual deep control see services like pagefly, sanity, etc or build a headless storefront and bring your own editor.

Also see the developer preview for nested blocks to try and get ahead of upcoming changes

Maybe this request needs to be moved to a different forum as I thought I wasn’t in a development forum.

This request is for the Shopify editor that us merchants use to edit and design content.

@PaulNewton

The links you’ve posted are to theme-based workarounds - we’re already forced to do that. Hence the request.

or build a headless storefront and bring your own editor.

Yeah right!

OK, I definitely posted in the wrong place sorry. If an admin could move to a merchant-friendly area, that would be great.

Cheers, Ben
