Hi everyone, I’ve looked through many apps and am thoroughly confused so I thought maybe someone more experienced might know exactly what I’m looking for. I’m seeking app that can in some sense “unlock” a product to be able to be purchased only upon specific cart total threshold i.e. it’s always active/visible but only able to be added to the cart when buyer has also add a certain amount of other items. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated !! thank you
You need to understand the basic core logic in Shopify’s sales channels. If an item is published in a sales channel, it is listed in that sales channel, and made available for sale. So a backpack is available on your Online Store sales channel, and an external app cannot disable that.
I understand your wanting to “unlock” a certain product, that would otherwise be locked out of purchase, that’s just not how Shopify works.
Ways around this. You can essentially “unlock” a product discount that would otherwise be unavailable. You can do this with upsell apps. So if I spend $50 on product A and B, I can get product C for a discounted price. This doesn’t line up exactly but that’s the best you’re gonna get. A very, very distant second place would be duplicate product C, and mark it as Unlisted (if you don’t know about this feature, go here). Then if someone reaches the threshold, you can automatically input the link or include it in the confirmation email. A final suggestion, and probably one I wouldn’t recommend, would be a “order limits” app, that sets a minimum order value before checkout.
Hi @adam_140
ontop of just plain conditional upsell apps, these are “cart progress bar” discounts, or “cart goals” discounts/upsells and a smattering of other keywords to search for in the app store; including your own words “cart threshold”.
The problem can be the showing a product IN the cart-page/cart-drawer and having threshold logic.
So sometimes it just boils down to a message/link that sends the buyer to the Product Description Page(PDP) where the add-to-cart is finally unlocked and usable.
This process can also be done with advanced theme customizations, reach out if you need such services.
Plus plan stores can also do this type of upsell in the checkout process itself using checkout-extensions.
For advanced content gating there’s apps like locksmith, Locksmith - Flexible access control for Shopify stores | Shopify App Store
has at least $x in their cart Creating keys | Locksmith
Hi @adam_140
I think the product unlocked shouldn’t be visible on your store before someone unlocks them by cart subtotal threshold, it will be clearer
hey @adam_140
I don’t think there’s an app for this “unlocking to be able to purchase an item“. There are apps like Minmaxify or MinCart, but they only allow putting restrictions on how many of items could be purchased. Shopify core does not natively support minimum-order value thresholds for specific products/products-only conditions.
What you can do is offer specific product with discount or as free:
For this, you can use Cartly’s Reward feature (![]()
app link: Cartly Slide Cart Drawer - Cartly: Shopify Cart Drawer & Cart Upsell App 2025 | Shopify App Store )
Cartly allows you to set up tiers based on cart total or item count that unlock rewards like free gifts when customers reach specific thresholds.
The reward bar shows progress toward goals and can display products that become available once certain amounts are reached. You can create up to 3 tiers and choose whether to base them on total cart value or number of items.
To set it up: go to Custom Cart → Features → Reward bar and click Enable.
Next, choose Cart total:
Example for Cart total basis
-
Tiers: $100 → Free shipping, $200 → 5% discount, $400 → Free gift.
-
Cart: $215 pre-discount.
-
Shopper unlocks Free shipping and 5% discount.
-
Message shows: “You are $185 away from Free gift.”
-
Next, Add tiers.
You can choose different reward for each tier (free shipping, discount, free item)

Cheers!
Hi,
As others have already explained, this comes down to the core logic of Shopify’s sales channels. There’s no native way to truly “lock” a product until a cart condition is met.
That said, the best workaround is to use a “Spend X, get Y at a discount” approach. With this method, you can set Product Y at a higher price, and once the customer spends X amount, Product Y is automatically discounted to the intended price.
You can also extend this logic further, such as:
-
Spend X to get 1 discounted Y
-
Spend 2X to get 2 discounted Y, and so on
To implement this smoothly, you can consider using BOGOS: Free Gift Bundle Upsell, which is designed specifically for these types of conditional promotions.
The BOGOS approach above works well for the mechanics.
One thing to think about: which product you unlock matters more than the threshold itself.
Check your order data - what do customers who spend above your threshold usually add anyway? Make THAT your free gift. It feels like a reward for something they were already doing, not a random freebie.
A free gift that matches buying behavior converts better than one that just looks nice.
