Topic summary

A Shopify store owner rebranded from artisanmarket.online to basaltandoak.com and is experiencing slow Google indexing despite implementing 301 redirects, completing the Search Console property transfer, and submitting new sitemaps.

Key steps already completed:

  • 301 redirects configured through domain host
  • Google Search Console site transfer initiated
  • New domain sitemaps submitted

Recommended actions from community:

  • Verify redirects: Use tools like httpstatus.io to confirm all old URLs return proper 301 status codes to corresponding new pages
  • Check technical settings: Ensure canonical tags point to the new domain, verify no noindex tags or robots.txt blocks exist, and confirm the primary domain is set correctly in Shopify
  • Manual indexing: Use URL Inspection tool in Search Console to request indexing for high-priority pages (homepage, collections, top products)
  • Maintain both properties: Keep the old Search Console property active temporarily to help Google process the migration
  • Update internal links: Ensure all site navigation, menus, and internal links point to the new domain
  • External updates: Update backlinks and social profiles where possible

Timeline expectations: Full domain migration typically takes 4-8 weeks for Google to completely process and transfer SEO signals, even when executed correctly. The discussion remains open with ongoing troubleshooting suggestions.

Hi everyone,

I’d love some advice in case I’ve missed something. I rebranded my shop earlier this year and changed my domain name. The new domain has been added to Shopify, but Google wasn’t picking it up. I then realised I hadn’t set up a 301 redirect from my old URL to the new one. That’s now done through my domain host, and I’ve also completed the site transfer in Google Search Console from one property to the other.

I’ve submitted the sitemaps for the new domain as well, but it still seems to be taking longer than expected for Google to recognise and index the new site.

Has anyone experienced this before, or is there anything else I might have overlooked?

Old domain: artisanmarket.online
New domain: basaltandoak.com

Thanks in advance for any insights!

SEO migration is significant. You need to identify old URL path for seo and redirect each URL page by page to recover the Past SEO, and also use relevant content

Hi @BandO,

You’ve already covered the most important steps — setting up the 301 redirects, transferring the property in Google Search Console, and submitting your new sitemap. Nicely done! :+1:

However, there are a few things that are often overlooked and can delay Google’s indexing after a domain change:

1. Check internal links:

Make sure all internal links (menu, footer, collections, product pages, blog posts, etc.) now point to the new domain. Leftover links to the old domain can confuse crawlers.

2. Keep the old property active:

Don’t delete the old domain property in Search Console yet — keeping it active helps Google fully process the redirects and transfer SEO signals.

3. Verify redirects properly:

Use a tool like https://httpstatus.io to confirm that all old URLs (including subpages) are correctly redirecting with a 301 status code to the new domain.

4. Request indexing manually:

In Search Console, use the “URL Inspection” tool to manually request indexing for key pages like your homepage, collections, and main product pages.

5. Check your sitemap:

Ensure your sitemap (e.g., basaltandoak.com/sitemap.xml) only contains URLs from the new domain — no outdated links.

6. Be patient:

Google can take 4–8 weeks to fully process a domain migration, especially if the old domain had established authority.

You’ve done everything correctly. Here are a few more things you can look for:

  • Ensure every old URL, not just the homepage, correctly redirects to its new equivalent on the new domain. You can test this by using a tool like httpstatus.io or Redirect Checker.

  • Confirm that your new domain’s HTTP and HTTPS versions are verified in Google Search Console.

  • Use the URL Inspection Tool in Search Console on a few important pages and request indexing if they haven’t been indexed yet.

  • Ensure all internal links within your Shopify store point to the new domain.

Hello @ogrony,

great question — and it’s awesome that you’re already thinking strategically about SEO rather than only running ads. :rocket:

Here are a few actionable steps to boost your Google rankings faster for your Shopify store GadgetStudioBD:

1. On-Page SEO Basics

Make sure each product page has a unique, keyword-focused title and meta description.

Use your main keywords naturally in the product title, meta description, image alt-text, and first paragraph.

Add internal links between related products and blog posts.

2. Technical SEO

Run a quick audit via tools like Ahrefs Webmaster Tools or Google Search Console to find crawl errors or duplicate content.

Optimize your page speed (Shopify themes often load unnecessary scripts — remove what you don’t need).

Ensure your site is mobile-friendly; Google’s Core Web Vitals reward that.

3. Content Strategy

Create blog articles around your product categories (e.g., “Top 10 Portable Speakers for Travel” or “How to Choose the Right Bluetooth Headset”).

Target long-tail keywords that show buying intent — they’re easier to rank for.

4. Link Building

Reach out to tech bloggers or gadget reviewers for backlinks.

Share your products on Reddit, Quora, and niche tech forums — it builds both traffic and SEO signals.

5. Structured Data (Schema)

Use JSON-LD or Shopify apps like SEO Manager or Smart SEO to add rich snippets (ratings, price, availability). These improve CTR in Google.

6. Ongoing SEO Monitoring

Track progress via Google Search Console and Google Analytics 4.

Adjust keywords and update old pages monthly.

One of the issues is indexing. I can proactively index all your pages across Google and Bing servers every day, once a day.

This will help search engines and LLMs pick up your content.

Hi @BandO,

It’s completely normal for Google to take some time to index new websites, especially during periods when they are updating search algorithms or adjusting how they evaluate content.

The best approach right now is to consistently publish new products or blog posts. This helps strengthen your website’s authority and demonstrates that your business is active and reliable.

With regular activity, you should see improvements over the next few months. I hope this helps!

Hey @BandO :waving_hand:

You’ve already covered the biggest steps — nice work getting the 301 redirects and Search Console transfer set up correctly. The slow indexing you’re seeing is normal after a domain rebrand, but here’s a full checklist to make sure nothing’s missing :backhand_index_pointing_down:

:white_check_mark: 1. Double-check the redirects

Use a tool like httpstatus.io or Chrome DevTools to test a few random old URLs.
They should return 301 (Permanent Redirect) → new domain equivalents (not 302 or meta refresh).

If you have any non-canonical redirects (like trailing slashes or uppercase versions), make sure they also resolve cleanly — Google sometimes delays indexing if it encounters redirect chains.

:globe_showing_europe_africa: 2. Reconfirm canonical and sitemap settings

  • Go to Shopify Admin → Online Store → Preferences and confirm your primary domain is basaltandoak.com.

  • View your homepage source → check the <link rel="canonical"> tag — it should show the new domain.

  • In Search Console, submit the sitemap for the new domain (example: https://basaltandoak.com/sitemap.xml) and remove the old one.

:package: 3. Keep both properties verified temporarily

Keep both the old and new domains verified in Google Search Console for at least 2–3 months.
Google continues to cross-reference crawl data during migration, and removing the old one too early can delay full reindexing.

:detective: 4. Re-fetch important URLs

In GSC → Inspect URL → Test Live URL → Request Indexing for key pages (like your homepage and top-selling products).
This nudges Google’s crawler to re-visit faster.

:four_o_clock: 5. Expect a gradual rollout

For most Shopify migrations, full indexing under the new domain can take 4–8 weeks, even when everything is correct.
You might still see your old URLs in Google results during that window — they’ll fade as Google refreshes its cache.

:gear: Optional (but helpful)

  • Make sure any external backlinks you control (social profiles, directory listings, etc.) are updated to the new domain.

  • Share the new sitemap in Bing Webmaster Tools as well — Bing and Google now share some index data.

Hi @BandO Hope this help:

  1. You set up the 301 redirects from your old domain (artisanmarket.online) → new domain (basaltandoak.com).
  2. You added the new domain in Search Console & submitted the sitemap.
These are exactly the kinds of items listed in migration checklists.

A few extra things to double-check:

  • Robots.txt / no-index tags
Make sure the new domain isn’t accidentally blocking crawlers or flagged as “noindex”. If Google can’t crawl the site, indexing will be delayed.
  • Canonical tags
Ensure each page on the new domain has correct canonicals pointing to itself (and not incorrectly pointing to the old domain) so Google knows which version to index.
  • Internal links & menu/navigation
If you still have links pointing to old-domain URLs, Google may be seeing a mix which slows things down. Auditing internal links helps
  • Redirect chain / redirect map correctness
Ideally each old URL → corresponding new URL with a single 301. Avoid long chains or redirect loops. Check that priority pages (high traffic ones) are handled
  • Backlinks / external links
While the 301s handle link equity, it’s helpful to reach out to top-referring sites and ask them to update to the new domain if possible, to speed up recognition
  • Check Google Search Console - Coverage & Indexing
In Search Console for the new domain, look at the Coverage report: any errors, excluded pages, or pages “Crawled – currently not indexed”? Also use “URL Inspection” on some key URLs to see how Google views them.
  • Be aware of time delay
Domain moves often cause a lag. Some checklists say it can take weeks (or even months for larger sites) for Google to fully index and transfer ranking signals.
  • Submit sitemap properly
For your new domain property in Search Console, make sure the sitemap is present, valid, and the URLs in it use the new domain, not old.
  • Ensure old domain property still visible
Keep the old domain property in Search Console too so you can monitor what Google is doing with those URLs and ensure the redirects are working as designed.

Hi @BandO,

You’re already on the right track! There are basically two key steps to make sure Google recognises your new domain properly:

  1. 301 Redirects – Set up a permanent redirect from your old domain (artisanmarket.online) to the new one (basaltandoak.com).

    • This tells Google that your site has officially moved.

    • The exact setup depends on your domain host, so it’s best to follow their specific 301 redirect instructions.

  2. Notify Google about the domain change – In Google Search Console, use the “Change of Address” tool to let Google know you’ve migrated to a new domain.

After that, indexing can still take a few weeks depending on your crawl budget and how often Googlebot revisits your pages. You can speed things up a bit by:

  • Resubmitting your sitemap under the new domain,

  • Requesting indexing for a few key pages manually, and

  • Making sure the redirects are working consistently across all URLs.

It sounds like you’ve done most of this already, so you’re likely just waiting for Google to finish re-crawling and reindexing the new site. :+1:

Hope this helps clarify!
