SEO Meta Description

Topic summary

A user questioned why SEO meta descriptions aren’t automatically populated for new products, noting that the system currently defaults to displaying the entire product description when the field is left empty.

Platform Behavior:

  • Most platforms don’t auto-generate meta descriptions because they should be short, keyword-optimized summaries rather than generic text pulls
  • When blank, systems typically extract portions of the product description, which may not be SEO-optimized

Google’s Dynamic Display:

  • Google doesn’t guarantee it will use your meta description
  • Search results are customized per user and query
  • Google may override custom meta descriptions with product description snippets if deemed more relevant

Recommendation:
Merchants should manually craft meta descriptions for each product, as these are the first elements users see in search results. A well-written description with targeted keywords and clear value propositions can significantly improve click-through rates and visibility.

Currently when we add a new product, unless we populate the SEO Meat Description with something, the area is populated with the entire product description. Why is this not completed or populated automatically?

Hi @Paul_Franklin

It’s David from SearchPie here. That’s a great question!

By default, most platforms don’t automatically generate a meta description because it’s meant to be a short, well-crafted summary that reflects both the product’s content and its target keywords. When left blank, the system usually pulls part of the product description instead, but that text isn’t always optimized for SEO or user engagement.

It’s also helpful to know that Google’s display of meta descriptions is dynamic and not always guaranteed. Google customizes its search results for each user and their specific search query. This means that even if you have a perfectly written meta description, Google might decide to show a snippet from your product description instead if its algorithm believes that’s a more relevant answer for that particular search. We actually recommend that each merchant write their own SEO meta description. It’s the first thing users see in Google search results, and a clear, compelling description can make your listing stand out among many similar options.

Take a moment to prepare your main keyword and write a concise line that highlights the key benefit or unique selling point, that small effort can make a big difference in attracting clicks and improving overall visibility.

Hope this helps!
