The way Shopify handles the SEO titles and descriptions can be a little confusing.
When you first create a product, Shopify doesn’t store any data in the SEO title/description fields, but rather uses the following:
SEO Title: the first 70 characters of the product’s title
SEO Description: the first 320 characters of the product’s description (after removing HTML)
However, if you add your own SEO title or description, Shopify will use those instead. When you’re looking at the CSV export of your products, if you see that the SEO title and description fields are blank, it means that there’s no custom values set so Shopify is defaulting to using the product’s title/description.
If you go through and add custom descriptions, either one at a time or with a bulk editor, then those should appear afterwards in the exports.
I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.
I have indeed added custom Titles and Descriptions for ALL my products. And they used to be exported just fine until the last time I took exports. Today, when I tried, the fields were blank.
Upon editing my products on shopify, all my custom data exists there, so it is in the system. Just not visible in the csv of product export.
Ah, sorry, you’re both right, I’m no longer able to see it in the export as well.
As it still shows up other places in Shopify it looks like it’s a bug with the export. I’d recommend contacting Shopify support and seeing if they can get it fixed, hopefully soon.
(If you need an export of the data right away one option is to use our Ablestar Bulk Product Editor app to export the data to a spreadsheet. There’s a 7-day trial with no limit on the number of products you can export so you could export the data for free until Shopify gets it fixed.)
