Setting Products Features and Use them to filter products

Hello,

I was used to work with Prestashop, now I’m planning to switch on Shopify platform but I still have a big doubt about one thing: products’ attributes.

On Prestashop, it’s such a simple thing add features or attributes as we want to call them to a product: in my example, for each product I have to add features like product’s material, color, length, diameter and other option and most important is that this features can help customers search products by filtering them.

What am I missing about setting my Shopify store or is there an App to build something similar?

The only thing I made is importing these infos from a CSV file and, using metafields, add them like text in a tab on product pages.

Sure you can help me, I give you my best regards to all of you.

Hey Aniellonasti,

There are a few ways to handle this easily on Shopify.

OPTION 1

Some themes have built in “filtering” options which are based around product tags.

https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/shopify-admin/productivity-tools/using-tags

Off of the top of my head, 2 themes that I know of which have this are:

Turbo theme - https://outofthesandbox.com/products/turbo-theme-portland

https://help.outofthesandbox.com/hc/en-us/articles/115008642047-Turbo-collection-page-Tag-filter-

Flex theme - https://outofthesandbox.com/products/flex-theme

https://help.outofthesandbox.com/hc/en-us/articles/360034953534-Flex-Tag-filter-and-faceted-filtering

OPTION 2

Alternatively, you can use the free ‘search & discovery’ app (made by Shopify) to handle basic filters (color, material, size), as well as create filters via metafields for more advanced filtering:

https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-store/search-and-discovery/filters

https://apps.shopify.com/search-and-discovery

https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/custom-data/metafields

OPTION 3

And then there are ‘advanced filtering’ apps available on the Shopify App store (for a monthly fee) which will provide even more filtering functionality.

https://apps.shopify.com/search?q=filtering

The most popular apps for this are:

Smart Product Filter & Search - https://apps.shopify.com/product-filter-and-search

Boost AI Search & Filter - https://apps.shopify.com/product-filter-search

Searchanise Search & Filter - https://apps.shopify.com/searchanise

Hope the above helps point you in the right direction! :slightly_smiling_face:

Cheers,

Stephen

Hello Stephens,

thanks for your answer and availability.

I was thinking that best solution is to use metafields definition as the feature Prestashop correspondance.

But I have another doubt.

I created a product tab called “Product Specifications” in wich I bulk imported, via Metafields Guru, all the product features in one text, like a “normal” description.

Now, I would add for all products (about 2000) each metafield definition but I don’t know how can I bulk import them.

In my Prestashop exported file, I have one cell called “Features” where the product features follow this scheme, ex.: Material:PVC, Color:Black, and so on…

As I am seeing here on Shopify is that I should repeat the product handle for each product feature and this will be very difficult and it will take me long time.

Can you suggest me as should I do for making an importation without errors and automatized?

Thanks in advance

Your best bet for bulk-importing metafields would be the Metafields Guru app (https://apps.shopify.com/metafields-editor-2).

Hello Stephen,

thanks for your reply but I’ve already installed the App and I don’t know how to set all the fields in just one unique cell.

Can you help me?

Hey Aniellonasti,

I don’t have enough experience with the app to be able to walk you through the exact steps. I’d recommend reaching out to the app’s support team directly, for assistance (support@metafields.guru)).

In the meantime (while you wait to hear back from them), you can also view their official help doc on how to do imports via CSV files: https://support.metafields.guru/support/solutions/articles/44002097804-how-do-i-import-metafields-from-a-csv-file-
