Shop appearance changed without code changes

Hi guys,

The appearance of my shop apparantly changed without editing any code. How is this possible? Did Shopify make any updates, or anything similar, which can cause this?
I recently came back from vacation, and now see that it does not look right. I had a colleague taking care of the shop while I was away, but he does not even know where to look for code editing.

Images in my collections are not showing, the user and cart icons are altered and various other small things has changed appearance. It makes no sense to me.

Is there an easy fix for this? I am not strong in coding at all, but I know how to make minor fixes. I have no idea where to look to figure out what happened.

Hey, @Martin91 . Thanks for reaching out about this; I can understand why you’re concerned.

Although Shopify does implement upgrades to the platform regularly (check the Shopify Changelog to keep up to date with that), there wouldn’t have been anything launched that would have affected your storefront. When unexpected changes to a storefront occur, it’s most often due to:

  • A third party app
  • A code customization
  • An issue with the theme

Therefore, were there any third party apps installed on your store around the same time that you noticed the appearance changes? If so, please contact the app developer directly - They’ll be able to check the integration of the app and make any adjustments needed to improve performance.

If a third party app is not what has caused the changes, and since you did not do any code customizations, then the next step would be to take a look at your theme. What theme are you using?

Hi Helen!

Thank you for a fast response :slightly_smiling_face:

I suspect it is an issue with the theme, as I have not installed a third party app within the last couple of months. I emailed with a guy from your support as well, who confirmed Shopify made changes to the theme editor, and he sent me screenshots where my theme and site in the editor looks fine. However, the live website looks different. According to your colleague it is possible that some of the new theme editor code overwrites some custom styling in my theme.

The theme is a custom one, and we’re unfortunately not in contact with the company who made it.

Is there an easy fix, or an easy way to look for the errors, when comparing the appearance in the editor and the live site?

/Martin

Hello again, @Martin91 ! Thanks for the update.

Theme coding, especially with a custom-made theme is out of my scope of knowledge, I’m afraid. If you are no longer in contact with your theme developer, then the best option to resolve this would be to reach out to a Shopify Expert. You can find information about how to hire an Expert from the Experts Marketplace in this Help Doc. I’d recommend submitting a job request for it where you’ll be able to discuss all the details of what’s occurring with your theme with the qualified Experts before you decide if, or who you’d like to hire.

Hope this helps!

Hi Helen!

Yes, I am aware it makes things a little more complicated. I will try to contact the theme developer, and if there’s no luck, I’ll look for an Expert through the marketplace.

Thanks for your help!

You’re welcome, @Martin91 . Good plan! If I can assist with anything else, please let me know.

Hi Helen!

Well, yes, just a quick question to know if it makes sense. I spoke to a friend of mine who took a quick look at the code.

He thinks there’s been a directory change, which changed the structure on the site. This causes the elements not being able to “find each other”. Does any of this sound just a little correct to you?

/Martin

Hey, @Martin91 . I’m afraid I’m not trained in coding, so to be honest with you, I don’t know if that sounds even a little bit correct. Aside from consulting an Shopify Expert, I suggest creating a topic about it on theTechnical Q & A Community board where a Partner, Expert or another Community member with experience with this, may be able to advise.
