Shop name not the same as domain name

Hi, I orignally Created a new Store with the name for example: “Turning-Point.myshopify.com” but then I realized I did not want the space in the middle to be a hyphen, so I went to “settings” and “Store name” and I changed it to “turningpoint.myshopify.com” which is what my domain currently is when I click on “view website”.

When I go to log into my store on shopify it still shows as “turning-point.myshopify.com” and then the domain inside is “turningpoint.myshopify.com” and if I check under “Domains” it shows that “turning-point.myshopify.com” redirects to “turningpoint.myshopify.com”.

While this is acceptable and completely usable, I am unsure if I will have to pay for both Domain names, or will Shopify automatically update itself?

If I pay for a plan, is it for the Shop name or for the original hypenated store name?

Please help! Thank you!

Hi, @Travelpatches !

Thanks for reaching out in our Community forums and for sharing your concern, I’d be happy to help.

I understand that you recently changed your-store.myshopify.com URL and have a few questions regarding if you have to pay for this domain. You are not actively paying for these domains as they are included with your account.

In order to provide some context, updating this URL really just changes what your customers see when visiting your storefront, the original .myshopify.com URL will still be used by Support and to sign in. Please make sure that you record and keep your original .myshopify.com domain name somewhere safe, regardless of whether you created it

My recommendation is to purchase a domain, which is the web address your customers will type into their browser. There are a number of benefits to having a custom domain. There’s a great doc that can also walk you through these steps here.

Let me know how it goes!
