Shopify Admin - How can I split an order line item?

We have a team of Customer Service reps who take phone orders for our customers and retailers. There are times when they need to apply discounts to a single product within a multiple product line item.

For example a customer orders 2 of a Product A and we want to give them one of the products for free. If you edit the product line and give a discount amount, that changes the amount of each product in that line item, so you have to calculate what discount amount to give in order for the cost to come out correctly. However, that causes an issue for our accounting team as they need to know how much free product we give away.

Is there a way to split the line item into two? Meaning the order would have two line items for Product A and we can mark one as free. It is similar to what you do for returns when there are multiple of the same product in one line item.

Example:

Hi @taraRCH - Why not just create a new product and include it in the draft order?

For example, you can create a new product called
ClearLungs Sport - Free with the same details and price (just make sure to hide it in the frontend)
You can add it to the draft order and apply the 100% discount to it. This will help the accounting team track

how much free product are you giving to the customer.

This is an interesting idea, however, that means duplicating our entire product line with “Free” products. That is a lot of manual upkeep.

Another issue comes with inventory, we use a 3rd party app for inventory management and order fulfillment. There is no way to tie two different products in Shopify to one product in the warehousing app. If we were to have the two products one for free and one regular, we will have to make sure there is inventory for both of those products. Since we don’t know how much free product we will give away this will result in a lot of continual manual inventory updating and moving.

I have used other eCommerce platforms that allow for line item splitting.
